I don't drink coffee, but I'd like to...

So here's the deal... for the last five years I worked at a place that had no free coffee, so I never bothered to drink it. I wasn't going to pay for it, so I never started.

Now I'm at a place that has Flavia machines everywhere, and it's all free. I have tried basically all of the flavors (hazelnut, french roast, etc) but they all taste like toilet water (or so I'm assuming).

I'd like the benefits of caffeine without buying red bulls (that's what I do now), and at a cheap cost. I don't need it at work as I'm usually good to go after an AM redbull for the day, but I'd rather replace that expensive habit with a cheaper one. Plus, my wife loves the idea that I'd drink coffee with her :)

Thanks for any insight, I'm a total neophyte to this world of coffee so take it easy. If it tastes bad, I won't drink it. On a related note, my wife gets me the Iced Caramel Macchiato (sp?) from Starbucks, and I like that a lot. But it's super sweet too :)

Thanks again!

So you wife drinks coffee... just drink what she drinks, I assume she makes the coffee for herself, now she can make 2 cups instead of one!

I'd say if you don't like it don't drink it.
I love coffee, always have since the first time I ever tasted it.

That said, my parents both hate coffee....

start with a black cup of coffee.

add cream and/or sugar until it's palatable to you.

She actually hasn't been drinking it lately, since she's pregnant.. I was going to get her a nice espresso machine, but I'd hate if she was the only one who appreciated it :)

well, grats!!

I hear espresso machines are difficult to clean/maintain. Keurig are the thing of today!!

Another option, get some good branded grounded coffee from the local shop and make it in a regular coffee machine. I like Sumatra

I never drank coffee without puking it all out of my system within minutes.

However, I love the aroma of brewed coffee.

I love the smell and could hang around coffee shops just for the comforting aroma.

Is this weird or what?

Do you enjoy the smell? Start with that. Make coffee for your wife in the morning and just enjoy the aroma.

You could also drink black tea as an alternative. It has caffeine too.

From what I understand, Keurig's suck for making espresso.

most coffee and places that make it suck. for some reason everyone likes their shit burnt. i blame the smokers that mostly make the stuff. they can't taste anything to begin with so to them it tastes ok.

Without the puking, I'm totally with you on loving the smell.

But, I wish I had coffee as part of my ritual morning diet. Many days I have to deal with hangovers and sleepless nights while at work without the benefit of coffee:(

Takes me longer than the rest of folks to recover in the mornings.

choose one:

1. drink black coffee until you don't dislike it
2. drink coffee with milk and sugar and slowly reduce the milk and sugar

I like my women like I like my coffee.

From the third world, relatively inexpensive and preferably ground down by someone else.

If you have a Whole Foods near you, they usually have a wide variety of roasts from different regions to choose from, and a grinder there to grind the beans if you don't have one. You can get one scoop (about 3 32 fl-oz pots IIRC) of each and have the world tour of coffee until you find one you like the best. Then add cream/sugar as desired. I did this for my dad for Christmas (gave him one scoop of about 9 varieties of coffee he's never tried) and he's loving it.

Flavia machines make bad coffee. I had two of them here at my office and poor at best. We just use the drip machine and it's a little better but I am guessing we need a better machine.

Coffee is an aquired tast and the best way to like it is drink it more often. Fill it with cream/milk and wean it down. I used to use sugar before I was a diabetic but now I just drink it black.

How about just espresso? I can tolerate that because it's quick and easy... any recommendations for good beans or whatever? I only ask because I'm getting it for my wife as a gift :) I know the machine I'm getting, just don't know anything about beans.

Coffee is the nectar of the gods...Unfortunately, places like Starbucks Fourbucks completely ruin it. Too burnt tasting, too acidic for me.
USUALLY, a local coffee shop/coffeehouse will make much better coffee than Starbucks...unless they use Starbucks coffee. <shrug>

Espresso is a matter of taste. SOME espresso beans will be good, others will suck...just like any other coffee beans. It's going to be "trial and error" until you find a brand that you like.
I can drink espresso/cappuccino/lattes, but would rather just have a good cup o' joe.
