I don't care what side you lean toward...the "free tax rebate" money is a stupid idea.

Let's solve the problem of Americans not being able to manage their money, by sending them some tax money back.

The only issue that gets bipartisan support is the most ridiculous - and, of course, most politically expedient - plan put forth in years.

Yeah, they should go all the way by eliminating personal income tax totally and drastically reducing the business tax.

I'm saving my money so that when its impotent attempt to save the economy fails I will have a few bucks to fall back on and buy soup at the grocery store so that my family won't starve when I've been out of work for 8 years and long since foreclosed on our house.

Well, it's not really free money is it? I thought it was a loan on what you'd get back as a refund on your 2008 tax return.

and don't you have to pay it back?

/i'm so confused, Mr. Kotter!

If the gov't is going to deficit spend us into oblivion anyway, why not let the American people choose where their grandchildren's money is spent?

Lets just throw money at the problem.

The problem is that they are spending too much money, so the solution is to spend more money.

Dont worry when we do away with the Temporary Bush Tax Cuts, you will be paying for it anyway.

Youre partially correct. If, when you do your taxes for 2008, and you get a refund, it is deducted from that refund, but wont put you in the negative. If you owe, it's a gift.

And you only get it if you've filed your 2007 tax return.

Wrong. Assuming everything else is equal you will pay 600 dollars less in taxes next year then you paid this year.

Ah, I see... thanks for clearing that up, sir.

I still think it's a bad idea all around.

It's not sending money back, it's borrowing 150bn from china for a year, upon which time we will borrow another 150bn from them.

The beauty being, we borrow the money from China (paying it back with interest,) and give it to Americans, many of whom will use it to buy products from China.

It's an economy-stimulating package, alright - just not ours.

It is NOT deducted from next years refund. As per the IRS website on this matter.

No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Free things from the Goverment are nice, but we can't afford any of them. ;)

Wanna boost an economy? It would seem that giving Americans a tax free year would be great, but no, we'd just become spoiled brats and expect it the following year and forever more....same as the effect of putting most folks on welfare.

I stand corrected. I mis understood. Thx Wreckem.

Per IRS FAQ:
Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

The pandering involved in this package is so obvious, that it's sickening. IMO, this whole thing is a ploy just get votes during an election year. What makes this especially bad is that we are just giving ourselves money we don't have.

Not a bad idea; I was going to donate mine to Ron Paul but winning the lotto probably is better odds than him ever becoming president.
