You guys who say that you haven't bought a CD in years because it is total crap.... well... there is a reason for that. It's called music trends! I'm sorry that there aren't anymore New Kids on the Block, Whitesnake, or Paula Abdul type groups... just get over it.

Music changes... so get a new taste in music and buy some CDs. D@mn... You'd think you guys would have figured it out by now.

Yeah, I loved the old Metallica, the old Led Zeppelin, the old Beatles.... but they are gone!

Now I listen to stuff like System of a Down, New Metallica, Dave Mathews stuff like that...

Moral of the story: Stop using the "There isn't anything good" excuse to pirate the new "crappy" music.

Maybe some of us don't like being trendy sell outs that follow the crowd and do what ever everyone else does. But hey, thats just me.

Yeah, but it's stupid to say "the reason I steal is because there is nothing worth buying." :)

That's not to say everyone uses this argument to justify pirating music and stuff, it just irritates when I hear it.

Congratulations. You listen to crappy music. Want a cookie?

I deal mainly with Vinyl recordings. So I have a huge collection of great albums. And they were all cheap. :)

That's what I am saying. For some reason, it is "trendy" for computer nerds to say "Man, I haven't bought a CD in years... if they would release something good, I might." Then they go on to pirate gigs of MP3s.... WTF!

Nice excuse...

i think this thread is going to be nothing but flame after flame but...

being a drummer, i look at and listen to music differently than non-musicians. I'm not saying everyone else dosn't know how to listen to music. I just hear different things. things that many people simply don't hear or recognize. i can hear every minute thing the drummer pounds out and the quiet artistic cymbal fills and such.
if i like a simple beat in a song or just the drumming in general, the fact the guitar riffs or vocals don't strike me as stellar dosn't mean anything to me.

My argument for not buying CDs is not that they are crap, but instead that one CD is likely to only have 1 or 2 goods songs.

It gives me the impression that the artist worked really hard on a couple of songs and then threw crap on to make 10+ songs on an album so they could make a CD. They release the couple of good songs and try to make everyone think that the rest of the album would be the same.

The days seem to be gone where I can buy a CD throw it in the CD player and love every song on it. Def Leppard, Zeppelin, Police, etc... all seemed to do that.

The last CD I bought was GreenDay's Nemesis. There are ~18 songs on it and I really only like 3 of them.

Truth is I don't download music either. Music is not an industry where I want to put my money.

If there was a service that would allow me to download an artist's good songs and pay $1 or $2 per song, then I would probably make use of it. Without that, there is no way I am buying a CD and only getting a couple of good songs.

Yeah I haven't downloaded DMB, Nstynk, M&M, and that other garbage since..well since never. But if stealing MP3's hurts the RIAA then I say go for it! The ends justify the means in this case.

Now that's a pretty good point.

I think Apple has that service now though... but yeah... it's Apple.

i dont use the "cd's these days are crap", i just think its ridiculous to charge so much for just a few good songs IMO. you'd think because of slumping sales, that they would stop creating these filler tracks, but noooooooooooo.

heres my new defense on why not to buy cd's, cd's are terribly overpriced, and when they are moderately priced, the gas to get to the music store is terribly over-priced.

by the way, dont take what i said above seriously. i have bought a couple of cd's this past week, i purchased a couple copies of my cousins cd to support his band, and miles davis and dave brubeck cd's. but i made a couple more points to push this discussion along. :D

Um, if you are making a point about people claiming that they copy music because 'theres nothing good released nowadays' then I agree with you.

But "music changes... so get a new taste in music and buy some CDs" ? What, is not buying cds unAmerican or something? ;) Is it the law that we all have to buy a certain number of cds a week?
If you don't like much of the crap put out at the moment - don't buy it. Don't download it either, mind...

this is it exactly. it's been a long time since we've seen something on par with dark side of the moon (and I'm not even a real fan of pink floyd)

"CD's are mostly crap..."

Maybe it doesn't justify piracy, but it CERTAINLY justifies why CD sales may be in the shytter. My .02

I don't pirate music, but I sure the h3ll don't buy CD's as regularly as I did in the Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Alice in Chains Era...

Stuff I download is usually obscure and impossible to find retail around here anyway. (I'll support local stores before sending my $$ elsewhere.) Last new CD I bought was Apocalyptica: Reflections. And that was over the last two years. Only others I got were used and old stuff from the 80s and 90s.

I agree that most new stuff is crap. Only time I listen to new stuff is on the radio in my car, where I don't have to pay for it either.

Wait - we're pirating the new crappy music? I thought we were pirating the old, good stuff that they sell at the same price as the new stuff. If I wanna hear the new stuff, I turn on my freaking radio.

Uh no one uses that excuse to explain their piracy. They use that excuse to explain why the RIAA idiots claim that music sales are down. Or the fact that most cds have only 1 good song on them.

I am not pushing my music tastes on you, I am mearly showing that I like newer bands too. And No, System of a Down does not suck. Of course that is completely subjective.
