i dont care how the economics work, i just think that is the right thing to do for the good of the people

can you explain how exactly is that gonna work? Please, I'd really like to hear it.
why should i care how it works? all i want is cheap gas

There's historical proof, from the 1970's, when the gov't did EXACTLY that, all that happened was supply shrank and there were MASSIVE shortages (companies that could not make a profit at those prices just closed up shop). SO, ask yourself, would you like gas when you need it, or no gas at all? Long lines at gas stations? Sounds fun to me.

NM, I see your sarcasm, but I'll leave this here for others.

Plus this is not a temporary shortage (outside the hurricane damage) but a continuing trend. Increase in demand is outpacking growth in capacity, so subsidies won't do anything.

what about the little guy, and the environment?!

you seem to have developed immunity to logic...

the problem with gas is that nobody really knows where it comes from, and how much it is really costing oil companies to produce/deliver/sell to us consumers.

I hate to say it, but people really should voice about the gas prices, because if nobody does, then why not have gas at $5-$6/gallon? Why not have it at $10/gallon? If not enough people complain then oil companies will have no problem charging more and more until we do.

WTF are you talking about... a subsidy WOULD do something regardless of supply or demand, it'd just be more expensive to maintain...

Subsidy would increase demand, which would increase consumption and lead to shortages. Also It would put our budget deficit to even a bigger hole and this would reflect in higher interest rates.

i think people would still pay for it. it's a necessity.

you can jack up the price of milk to 6 bucks a gallon, i'll just drink less milk or buy a cow or something, but you jack up the price of gas, maybe i'll drive a bit less but how in hell do i drill my own oil for gasoline?

theres nothing you can do about it if you need to drive

And If I don't believe in it, it can't exist.

I think its time to start using this "strategic reserve"

Yes I totally agree. The problem is, people only think about what they pay at the pumps. They laugh at SUV drivers because even at $5/gallon, they still only pay $20 for a full tank for their super electric Honda car. Great. Thats good for them.

However, what they don't see is that their bread and milk and bananas and clothes and etc... now cost more to be delivered to their grocery store. Now the grocery store has to raise their prices. This will fuel inflation like crazy. (pun intended) So gas prices affects everybody, not just the soccer mom who drives the huge SUV.

no sh!t. i was looking at plane tickets from philly to boston for october which was 130. a week later (this is about 3 weeks ago) it jumped to 160 and i grabbed it right there and then, i doubt a week makes that much difference when the trip was 2+ months away

imagine the heating cost for this winter.... my last apt. meeting they were already thinking about a "gas surcharge" on our already high maintenance to offset the increased cost

again nothing i can do about it, what i did is I switched jobs for a 70% pay increase 🙂
