I dont accept tips from my massage clients, i have a sign at the front desk stating that "tips are not accepted" I like keeping my practice honest and i feel that tipping takes away from the professional service I offer. Some may find this odd but its how i choose to run my business.

For the first time on Monday i had a client get upset because i would not accept her tip. so i dont think ill be seeing her come back.

The vast majority of people I'm sure have no problem with that.

A few might find it insulting that you emphatically refuse accept a gratuity. Guess you just ran into one, there will be others.

Sometimes you have to make exceptions to keep customers. It offends some people if you don't accept their tips, like that lady. I've found it mostly happens with people over 30 though...

What do his sexual proclivities have to do with this?

The client might expect a little more...if you know what I mean.

Maybe you should setup a donation box for a local charity and tell them that you don't accept tips, but these local groups would be very happy to have your support?

You probably think you're so humble and mighty for refusing to take these people's tips. Well part of being humble is having the ability and decency every now and then to accept charity to make somebody else feel good.

Just have a policy that any tips you get will be donated to a charity or something. You don't have to advertise it but in a case like this, you can still accept it and then donate it to wherever you want.

I don't think that's the case with the OP at all, doesn't sound like an ego battle, but rather he just simply doesn't believe in it.

Beat me to it, was jsut about to suggest this. Next time someone MUST tip, have a donation box handy, and tell them that's where it'll go. I'm guessing the tipper was assuming you'd eventually 'give in' like everyone else after being offered over and over again. I'd be pretty pissed to, "here's free money I'm begging you to take, oh, you won't take it, well, have this then ..l..".

I like the fact that you don't accept tips, and I'm sure most of your clients do too. However, if someone really wants to tip I think you should make an exception. To do otherwise is to refuse thanks, which is quite rude. As long as you're clear that you prefer not to take tips and hope it isn't a habitual thing, accepting it graciously is both appropriate and tactful.

Sounds to me like he feels that tipping is for lower-class jobs like waiters, not for professionals. By accepting tips he would be lowering himself to the level of a waiter. Not really humble at all.

(I'm not criticizing the OP for thinking that way)

Umm, what part of his post did you pull that from if I may ask? His only argument was that if you tip one type of profession, why not tip all. Why are only certain professions tipped? That's his point, but please do make broad assumptions about a persons two paragraph post.

You should find a local charity that does donation jars and put one behind the front desk. If someone insists on tipping you, hold out the jar with the charity name prominently displayed. Thank them sincerely on behalf of said charity.

The donation box is a great idea, but I'm sure that the other people offering tips that would not have been offended when turned down will now feel obligated to give to it too.

I agree with your decision to not accept tips. Perhaps you should call and apologize for not accepting because it seemed to offend her and explain why you didn't want to, but you would like for her to return as a customer.

she shouldn't get upset that you didn't accept the tip. sounds like she's a wackjob anyway.

i don't accept tips either, but i've had them forced on me, (i mean literally threw the money at me) or else the person will say buy the office coffee and donuts.
