I do NOT trust rebooting or shutting down Win 2003 servers anymore

I have had this happen several times on different machines some of them are brand new builds. Last night i had to install a SP for Crystal Reports and did it from home. The SP took 30 min and when i went to reboot the second time the server did not come back. AHHHHH WTFBBQ!!!! so i drove into the office at 1am and when i got here the server shutdown instead of restarting. I checked the system log in event viewer just to make sure i didnt screw up and select shutdown instead, but nope i selected restart, says so right in the event log.

"received restart command from administrator."

this has happend to my boss and another co-worker. has anybody else seen this?

I got about 20 or so SBS 2003 and Server 2003 boxes at different clients on assorted hardware (but mostly Dells). All are managed remotely. Each of these is rebooted monthly for patches. I've never seen what you are seeing.

The worst thing I've seen is Quickbooks 2007 keeping it from shutting down/rebooting on the first request.

Maybe you can tell us what remote access client you were using? I've never had this happen using RDP/pcAnywhere/VNC.

I've seen this before with a few computers, and it was a sign of a blown motherboard. In those same screwed computers, simply plugging the computer in causes it to turn on; no need to hit the power switch.

Sounds like your CR service pack install app sent the wrong command, not the OS. The OS is only going to do what it's told.

I have been using Server 2003 for going on 5 years now, I have never had this problem.

I've never had that problem with 2003 Server, and I use it every day.

That's usually a BIOS option.... What to do when power is restored: on, off, or previous state.

Sometimes over terminal services if you have a laggy connection you think you picked restart but your mouse scroll might of actually chose shutdown but it did not register yet but by the time you hit ok it switched on you. I've had that happen, can suck hardcore if theres no drac in the server.

So Quickbooks is causing that...ah!

Sounds similar to some weirdo bug we had with a couple of SBS boxes back in the NT4 days.
For some reason the Shutdown/Restart/Log out choices in the drop down menu were wrong, I don't remember exactly what option did what, but I think Log Off made the server reboot, Shutdown was Log Off, and Reboot was Shut Down.
Kinda funny once you got used to it 🙂

Not very relevant, more of an entertaining anecdote 🙂
