No, in all seriousness, I agree with the OP, and I am either atheist or agnostic (technically a "true" agnostic who doesn't believe it is humanly possible to know - but atheist in that I believe it is logically impossible that any God as defined by any current religion can possibly exist).
I'm able to dismiss religious fanatics and their stupidity rather easily. What really bothers me is when idiot atheists come in and say completely illogical, stupid shit like religion does x, y, and z. They attempt to separate religion out as if it's some sort of third party that came down to Earth to drink our water and eat our flesh. It's as if they think humans don't find ANY excuse to do ANYTHING stupid and immoral. I really sick of those who tell a religious person "religion is the cause of {some war}" with an unbelievable smarmy voice that should be ripped directly out of their stupid throats and shoved up their anus so that its with all of their other stupid crap.

Religious fanatics and fanatical atheists exist in probably about the same percentages. The difference is there's a few billion more religious people than atheists so the total number of religious fanatics is proportionally more enormous than the number of atheist fanatics.
I believe atheists have pretty much always been around in the same percentage of numbers, but tolerance for non-believers was nonexistent and could lead to ostracism, family problems, lack of job opportunity, community strife, etc. But now that the internet has allowed widespread (mostly) anonymous communication, what you perceive as a giant community of atheists is simply the same people finally being able to express themselves without fear of a massive backlash in their personal lives.
I also have never heard of an atheist, even the rabid ones, walking up to strangers and asking if they believe in god, and then haranging them if they do. Yet it is common in airports, bus stations, or many other public places to find someone preaching that if you don't believe in god you are going to hell.

Two things:
1. The term atheist has been vilified and perverted to mean "someone who has a fanatical devotion to the un-belief in God." Now, non-religious people of all types are scrambling to come up with new terms that they deem more acceptable, either to themselves or to others. I don't really like that. It just seems like a cop-out. We need to make people understand that atheists aren't all crazies who hate religion the way RESmonkey does. I'm not "agnostic" because I am confident in my beliefs (not fanatically devoted to them, but confident). I'm not "spiritual but not religious" because I don't believe in spirits any more than I believe in angels, demons, God, etc. I'm not a "secular humanist" because I don't identify with the term "humanist," even though I basically agree with secular humanists have to say. Perhaps "non-religious" fits me better than "atheist," but I sort of feel like I want to take the term back. Sort of how like other oppressed groups throughout history have tried to use formerly derogatory terms for themselves ("awesome dude" vs. African-American, "queer"/"i love you" vs. homosexual).
2. I effing despise anyone who tries to push their beliefs on others. In fact, I think I dislike extreme atheists more than extreme Christians. They're both bad, but since I consider myself an atheist, I don't like that those people give me a bad name. From what I understand, many mainstream Christians feel the same way about evangelicals.

Why do the christians need the mods to help? They're answering to a higher power, if the magical invisible man in the sky wants the atheists banned he'll do it himself.

From birth they are brought up in the church. Some go to religious schools, always being around religious people. Thier views are never contradicted or challenged. They never encounter anyone who doesnt hold thier beliefs. And when they do encounter these people in public, religion is probably not brought up. The friends they met were probably from the church or school, so everyone they associate with is on the same boat (or ark?).
Then along comes the internet/message boards, where ideas flow freely. What a shock it must be to the god-squad that there are people out there who didnt get caught up in the fish-net that is youth indoctrination. In a way, I feel sorry for them. It is hard not to have your mind molded when it is started so young.

Meh, I'm agnostic and I'll still agree with the OP on some points.
Obviously, people are generally more respectful IRL (due to the fact that they don't usually want to get punched in the face). Online, however, atheists seem to be a particularly outspoken and venomous group. Sorta the online counterpart to angry evangelists IRL.

why can't we just respect others' religions? religion is a matter of faith and that's all that should matter to those who choose to partake in a religion. anyone trying to convert the other group are the ones at fault...

What about the people who didn't grow up in said environment and made a cognitive choice to go for it?
From birth those poor atheists are brought up in secular schools, always being around other religiously ignorant people. Their views are always confirmed and edified. They never encounter anyone who doesn't hold their beliefs..and when they do encounter these people in public, they go absolutely banana bonkers to vindicate their on preconceived notion of what is, in actuality, a decision they never made in the first place themselves.
