I opened up the case since I needed to pinch the floppy for something else. I managed to pull out the front firewire connector from the board. Not force it, just picked up the wrong thing. I haven't tried putting that back in yet, nor the floppy. When I switch the power supply on at the back of the machine then the board and the case lights flash at me in unison.

I must have tripped something. Everything that needs to be installed appears to be installed. I would be grateful if someone had an idea as to what the problem is.
Thanks
If my system rig doesn't show up correctly, it's the Asus board as stated above, inside an Antec Sonata case.

Sounds like an onboard diagnostic thing. Lots of motherboards have it now. Try checking your manual or the manufacturers website, there may be information on the codes there.

Indeed it was a diagnostic thing - the motherboard had quite rightly decided that the power cable needed to be seated completely in its socket, not half-in, half-out as it was.
Thanks
