I didn't think USB flash drives could have problems like this

I bought a Samsung/US Modular "MightyDrive", 2GB. It's got some serious issues. When I copy a bunch of files over to it, and CRC compare the originals to the ones on the MightyDrive, it's fine. But then I pull out the MightyDrive, put it back in, and suddenly all those files (or most of them) are corrupt. Even if I do the "safely remove hardware" thing, it reduces the amount of corrupt files a bit, but there are still some that are corrupt.

I guess you can wind up with a cheaply made USB flash drive. I didn't really expect this. Oh well, you get what you pay for (2GB USB flash, $30 after $20 rebate). Time to go to Fry's and spend $60-$70. At least it'll work, and if it doesn't, I can easily return it.

I ran out and bought a Lexar Firefly 2GB. Works like a charm, all CRC checks work perfectly, no matter what. Too bad it's ass-slow though. Oh well. At least the data is safe this time, and I like the form factor a lot.

I did not find a "Mighty Drive" but did find "Monstor Drive" by US Modular (2GB). The Monstor drive is a USB hard drive and not a flash memory drive. It looks like it is a defect and you should send it back. It does have a 3 year warranty.

As for the Lexar, which is a memory flash drive, I had my Lexar "JumpDrive 2.0 Pro" fail on me. It was a little over a year old at the time it started acting up. It took about 4 weeks for the whole warranty thing to get done but they did send me a replacement drive. Nothing last for ever.

you may need to disable write caching - removing a drive (any kind) with write caching enable could cause data corruption

Very good call. In general, flash drives should always be optimized for quick removal - that turns off write caching. But, at the same time, a defect is possible. Send it back if possible - exchange for another. I have several Lexars, and they are never a problem.

Write caching is disabled. Heck.. I just COPIED a file over, and it's corrupt without even removing the USB flash drive.

And no it's not a Monstor drive.. it's "MightyDrive" for sure. It just doesn't seem like Samsung nor US Modular supports it. I'm going to send it back to buy.com for a refund if possible. If not, oh well.. I learned my lesson. For USB flash, stick with Kingston, Sandisk, and Lexar. Or at least check to see if the product actually appears on the manufacturer's web site. If it doesn't, it's fishy.
