Winamp, produced by Nullsoft, is owned by AOL ? :Q

The company which writes perhaps the most bloated, buggy, craptacular ISP code out there also produces the slickest, tightest, most user-friendly audio playback platform program out there as well?

To be fair, AOL only acquired Nullsoft in 1999, but two years is plenty enough time for a code hacking bunch of morons from team AOL to royally f*ck up Winamp once it was in its clutches...

AOL overpaid for Winamp about a year ago. They had nothing to do with its creation. For hte most part, the same people still work on it now as did before they sold it to AOL.

Wasn't part of the acquisition agreement that Nullsoft retains their own development team and AOL is hands off? I know that sounds really unrealistic from a business sense, but look at WinAmp: it's still pretty feature rich and it's not really ad driven, and there aren't huge "AOL" logo eyesores plastered all over.

I was pretty shocked when I found out as well. I think the whole nullsoft team was kept intact though, and that is why it hasn't transformed into bloadware.

We shall see with winamp3 though. Thus far I like the changes that they made (I use winamp3 beta2 over winamp 2.77 or whatever the latest version of the 2.xx line is), but they haven't implimented everything yet. Still enough time to screw it up (which would suck royally:()

I know, I was allarmed to find out.

However, given chance to think about it, AOL may be what is keeping Winamp FREE. I am thankful for that as I have no way of paying for overseas goods. It IS worth money though. Anyway I have been thankful to find no trace of AOL software on my drives.

as far as i know Justin Frankel (winamp creator) doesn't work on it much anymore... now he's just kicking back and enjoying his money
back in 97/98 he used to go on irc and we'd be able to talk to him about specific bugs and features in winamp.... now he hardly ever chats anymore...

As long as an AOL icon doesn't show up on my desktop after I install winamp...I'm happy.

Stick to the older versions of winamp;)

I don't know what to make of it.
ICQ and Winamp may have died with the internet shakeout.
Aol in some ways did us a favor by buying them out.
As long as AOL exists most likely so will ICQ and Winamp.
I have no love whatsoever for AOL but I won't complain if they want to waste their money supporting ICQ and Winamp. :p

Ah, I see. So, you'll never watch another movie from Warner Bros. or New Line Cinema again (like The Matrix or LOTR)? You won't watch CNN, TNT, TBS, TCM, HBO, the WB network, the Cartoon Network, watch the Atlanta Braves, or read Time magazine! And you certainly won't use AIM or ICQ.

Because AOL owns all of the above! :Q

I didn't call myself an activist or a freak, no. I use AIM. I will watch things like The Matrix. God, I hate your kind.

Aye, take it easy. I don't care much for AOLTimeWarner either, but I use many of their products, so I can't don't call myself an unsupporter. Maybe just a wary consumer. I'm just pointing out that it's nearly impossible to avoid them, even if you disapprove of them.

AOLTimeWarner does own all of the above though.
