Over 160 of these fuckers being delivered to the Apple Store today, presumably for the Friday debut. Jesus!

How many are in each box? I wonder what the retail value of the inventory in that photo is.

I know they're popular, but I'm surprised at how many people seem to be jumping on the new version.

new features look cool, but not so amazing that I'd dump my last-gen iPad that's working perfectly.

Weight in the mobile sector is everything. Same performance with 2/3rds(3/4ths?) the weight? I can understand the appeal.

You didn't realize how popular a cult status symbol is among the cult followers?

Dunno about iPads, but there was a claim out there that for the iPhone 5s/5c launch, the value of the phones on the UPS planes was more than the actual planes.

BTW, I'm shocked my 2.5 year old iPad 2 from 2011 is still being sold in 2013, for $399 no less.

Since it's still fully supported and runs iOS 7, I decided to invest just a little more in it, and just ordered a Logitech Ultrathin Wireless Keyboard and Cover for it.

I ordered the red:

Also, when I was looking into it, it really demonstrated just how well the ecosystem is supported from the accessories side. There are a bazillion different keyboards available specifically for iPads, esp. for the iPad 2/3/4 models.

Maybe something like that will make me like the iPad 2 I got better (Dish sent it to me when I signed up for free). That clunky on screen keyboard ruins the browsing experience for me (and that's mainly what I've been using it for). So far I just don't get the appeal of a tablet - just seems like a weak laptop without a keyboard. If I do seriously browsing as in comparison shopping I just put it down and head for a desktop.

My friend was just asking me which last-gen iTouch she should get for her 7-year-old, something relatively recent that could run modern apps but wasn't going to cost a bundle for a kid. I was shocked that only the latest 5th-generation iPod Touch was supported under iOS7. The last 4th-gen model only goes up to iOS6, and the 4th-gen model is the oldest model to support iOS6!

That's insane!! I've been whining about Android fragmentation & lack of manufacturer updates since day one, but seriously Apple?! And then they go ahead & support the ancient iPad 2. Makes no sense haha.

Our ipad 1 crashes all the damn time, even after a fresh reset / clean everything. Can't even grab apps from the appstore without expecting it to crash back to the home screen. The least they could do is give it iOS7, but no. I refuse to support Apple voluntarily. Especially when they screw customers who'd pay a half a grand premium on their products. Thankfully we were not one of them.

It makes a bit more sense if you consider that the ipod 5g has the same SOC as the ipad 2. What doesn't make sense is the fact that the iphone 4, which shares the A4 processor with the ipod touch 4g, does support ios 7, albeit without a lot of features. If they can make it work on the iphone 4, why not the ipod 4g?

Actually it makes perfect sense, and in fact that is one of the two reasons I did NOT buy the iPad 1.

The original iPad only has 256 MB RAM. The iPad 2, like the iPhone 4, has 512 MB RAM. The iPod touch 4G, also only has 256 MB RAM. Only the 5G version of the iPod touch has 512 MB RAM.

BTW, I also have the iPhone 5s, which has 1024 MB RAM. I feel for a flagship 64-bit device, 1024 is OK but not ideal. They really need 2048 MB, probably because 64-bit has a bigger memory footprint. I've been getting Safari tab reloads because of the RAM limitation.

I'm sorry, I'm too busy doing boring things like surviving easily with a Galaxy Nexus - while at the same time having a retirement fund. Ohh darn.

The iPad 1 is really old now in mobile terms. Its SoC is like a tenth as powerful as an A7 in the new iPads.

It was never a great device hardware-wise. Those who bought first-gen iPads were like first gen iPhone users- they paid a premium to play with the first gen of a new category of devices.

It wasn't until the iPad 2 that the category had a refined product.
