.... and is running for Senate, several house districts, governor, and a bunch of state/local positions. Or maybe it just seems that way.

I don't know what's happening in other places around the country, but here in OH you can't turn on your TV or radio for 30 seconds without some ad blasting some candidate for "voting with Pelosi and Obama" or talking about taking control back from Pelosi. Then this morning I read an article in the local paper saying focus groups show those ads to be very effective, resonating with independents and republicans alike. The polls certainly seem to agree. Governor Strickland (D), formerly very popular and supposedly one of the people considered for the VP job in 2008, is going to get taken to the woodshed in a couple of weeks, Portman is going to trounce Fisher (D) who previously led etc etc.

Looks like most of the house members who voted for the disastrous healthcare bill are going to pay the appropriate price of getting booted out of office.

Who'da thunk that a nutty congresswoman from Cali would have such an impact on elections in OH. Thanks Nancy!

This is politics 101. I had no idea Bush was running for president in 2008 either.

To be fair the "representative" role of a Congressional Representative is pretty much a joke. Aside from pursuit of earmarks, Nancy Pelosi is just as much a representative of Ohio as those who are nominally your Ohioan representatives.

In some ways the vote for Speaker is the most important vote a Representative will ever cast. The Speaker determines which bills and amendments even make it to the floor for a vote. And under Pelosi, increasingly the Speaker determines whether the Representatives have even had a chance to read the bill or amendment they are voting on. (Whether or not a Representative would have actually read a bill before voting on it given the chance is up for debate.)

Beyond that, often one party or the other sees an advantage in nationalizing an election. In 2008 the Dems benefited from nationalizing the election and the Pubbies were running from Bush; in 2010 it's the Dems the public hates, so the Pubbies benefit from tying each Democrat candidate to the Democrat leadership and the Dems are running from Obama (and often from their own votes) in the hopes of clinging to power.

....one small way that it's nice to live in a state where election outcomes are basically foregone conclusions. Nobody bothers to campaign very hard, so pre-election stupidity is blessedly minimal.
