This guy claims it was sold in Europe and later brought to the US. I dont know if it was factory painted or later on.

Unrelated:
I saw an X-bow on the road last week. But was unable to snap a picture of it. Driver and passenger had helmets.

I don't think very many of them were and I'm pretty sure that wasn't an option from the factory. If you see a Delorean that is anything but bare stainless steel it was likely painted after being sold.

I am a huge huge huge Delorean nerd. Won't get one due to safety issues (Y-frame, fiberglass underbody, no airbags, etc.), unfortunately. But they did paint a few as factory test units (yellow, red, black), and for the stainless models, some people have chosen to paint them for various reasons. Sometimes the most economical way to make the car look nice is to paint them (& reverse-wise, it takes a lot of time & expense to strip them back to stainless, which iirc they did with at least one of the factory-painted ones). Personally, I only like them in two colors: British Racing Green (I think only 2 exist, both painted aftermarket) & black: (because stainless is the way to go!)

They did make three or four other special custom Deloreans for a promotion, which were 24k-gold plated:

Ugh, why would you paint a DeLorean. That's close to sacrilege.

Did you see what Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas did to his? Note that he sunk $700,000 ($700k, not a typo) into it:
