It started with what they call a big bang. Then the earth was made, then dinosaurs came, then they left, then god said "No way am I spending the rest of eternity on this without beating it off", so then the internet came.

Everything was grey.
And then there were frames.
And here we are now.

In the beginning, there was ICQ and Netscape and the people were oppressed by great evils like RealPlayer, programs which possessed a desire to dominate all life................

Then, the Borg came..............Internet Explorer and the supporters of it's tyranny (WMP and MSN) destroyed not only Netscape but ICQ and Real and all of the remnants of the old world.......

Everyone had geocities and angelfire websites that were the most craptastic things you'd have ever seen.

I made my first Angelfire website in 1996.

I got internet at home in 1997.

It was dominated by ICQ and Netscape 3 Gold...IE was total crap back then. Netscape 4 was crap too, for that matter.

So did all major retailers rush to get online shops? What was there to do the 1st year? Obviously no chat rooms/online forums?

IMO the first step was the phone modem, not exactly sure when it was invented. But by the early eighties IT guys were using modems to connect remotely to main frame business computers. Tech colleges began experimenting and forming crude LANs, then Al Gore came along and connected them all:)

The first ISP's I remember are Prodigy and AOL. I signed up for AOL in 88 or 89. At the time the lack of content was astounding by todays standards, AOL's own hosted content was generally more volumous and useful than the "World Wide Web" as it was refered to at the time. I connected through a 2400 baud modem that was ass slow, even compared to current dialup. And the content was almost entirely all text, very few images.

Back then you were either on AOL or IRC and one was a helluva lot cheaper to be on than the other.

MSIE 3 came out in 1996 or so. ICQ and RealPlayer didn't really come into their own until after that.

"online malls", a 3D virtual shopping experience, was the big thing in the early-mid 90s, and pushed mostly by CompuServe.
