I didn't expect I'll be having that many issues with Vista / Office 2007

Argo

Lifer
Let me start by saying I've been using XP / Office 2000 compbination for the past 5 years. In that time I probably had my system crash on me 3-4 times tops.

Now fast forward to now - 5 months ago I got a new laptop that came with Vista / Office 2007. So far I've been pretty disappointed with both.

1) To start off I'm getting annoyed by constant "this function used to be here, where is it now?" issues. What genius decided to move EVERYTHING around on software that was around for 10+ years (this refers mostly to office 2007).

2) Outlook 2007 takes about 5 minutes to completely start and become operational on my older P4 work laptop. Outlook 2003 used to take 20-30 seconds.

3) I've had excel 2007 crash on me several times. Never had that with 2000.

4) IE7 crashes constantly on my Vista laptop. Doesn't crash on 2 XP machines I have.

I realize most of this is probably common knowledge and this is a weak rant, but I'm just supprised how poor Vista and Office 2007 release are. It almost seems like those were released before they were ready.

Rule #1 is never upgrade to an MS OS until it's behind at LEAST one service pack, preferrably two.

Rule #2 is to keep the oldest version of Office you can possibly get away with, or use openoffice, because MS Office gets worse with every iteration.

Rule #3 is, NEVER use outlook even if you have to sell your daughter to the Russian mafia to avoid it.

Argo, as you have surmised that is not normal behavior. However I think you are jumping to conclusions because I have not seen any Vista and 2k7 systems with the symptoms you are describing. If you have not yet I suggest a clean reinstall and readup on good practices in the Security forum. One more thing, "common knowledge" here for Vista is "often" idiots whining about pointless things.

jagec, stop posting uneducated, biased FUD.

I've had all of these problems

1). Yes Office 2007 is a piece of crap.
2). Sounds like you don't have enough ram. Right now I'm posting from a computer with 512mb ram and it takes about a minute for firefox to start. Buy more ram, or use readyboost, or get a new computer.
3). You have installed old plugins that were designed for Outlook 2000/2003. Uninstall them.
4). You have installed IE plugins that were designed for IE on XP, this includes Google Desktop and spellcheck plugins. Uninstall them.

In the mean time you can probably get away with using Office 2000/2003. I personally don't know anybody who has upgrade to 2007; people using warez do not count. You can also switch to Firefox for the time being until they work all the bugs out of Vista's IE and how it crashes with plugins.

jagec : a lot of your comments are FUD and untrue.

Argo: What's happening to your system is not normal,I have never had IE7 crash, however I do use Firefox and Thunderbird for my main browser and emails.

I don't use Office 2007 with Vista so logical thing would be uninstall it and see if stability improves?

Not really ,you think its normal for IE7 to keep crashing and Office 2007 to be unstable?..Do you think any software company would release a product like that?
Does not take a rocket scientist to see and know he has a problem somewhere.

It could be another program causing the problem,by uninstalling Office 2007 he can see if stability improves,if not then the problem is elsewhere ,if it does improve then maybe Office 2007 has problems with another software program.

Windows 95, Mac OS 9, any Linux software I've ever tried to use, Office 95, EA video games, ...

I was referring to Office 2007.

I don't see what Win95,Mac,Linux software has to do with this thread? And is that post useful to him,I think not.

I don't think you understood the point of my post, so I'll quote it again.

Yes.

I make it clear so even you can understand,if Office 2007 was so unstable it would not have been released, any comments to other software is not valid, because its your opinion and also has nothing to do with helping Argo.

Don't bother replying I'm done with this thread for now, unless I find any new info that will actually help Argo.

That's unusable. 20-30 seconds is extremely bad too. Lack of RAM? Outlook 2007 starts instantly for me (like previous versions of outlook).
4) IE7 crashes constantly on my Vista laptop. Doesn't crash on 2 XP machines I have.
I have had IE7 on vista crash on me. Is there an option to run each tab in a separate process?

I have just installed them and rather like them (coming from xp and office 2000). Had some stability issues which seem to have been fixed with newer ethernet/graphics/sound drivers.

Use the IEtab plugin for Firefox and set the plugin's options to load all "http://*" pages in IE. I know a guy who does this for compatibility (all pages are designed for IE), and it's rock solid in terms of stability. As an added bonus, that essentially lets you use Firefox extensions for IE.

The outlook 2007 problem is for work computer with 1GB ram, running XP. I do have a rather large mailbox, so that might be the issue. It did work a lot faster with older outlook, though.

The "look for solutions online" feature claims that the crashes are due to Adobe Flash... I tried upgrading, uninstalling - no help.
