I did not think this was possible - blown Z560s

My friend bought a set of Logitech Z560 speakers about a month ago. About a week and a half ago, he said that the satellites were cracking. I thought it was just the music he was playing. Today, he was going through different songs and in everyone the satellites were cracking. So, I guess that he blew his Z560s that are about a month old. I does not really suprise me though, he regularly listens to them at half volume or louder with the bass at similar levels. I guess that is what you get for listening to loud music all the time.

Same thing just happened to mine...I happen to be a huge fan of Drum & Bass music and there's only one way you can listen to DnB...loud as hell.
Anyways, I blew the sub and crap so I'm sending it back. Hopefully the new one will last a bit longer, I only had this system for 3 weeks before it blew.

My friend listens to a lot of techno and other bass heavy music which did his system in. Will breaking in the speakers help any?

It Probably won't help that much. Just tell him to turn the volume down a bit. If it caused the speakers to blow, its probably not a very safe volume for his hearing either.

just so you all know..
Breaking it in will definately help preserve the speakers.. if they werent the z560's;)
These guys are prety notorius for blowing speakers.. mainly the sub. at ANY volume regardless of break in time.

over at sharky's just about every 2 days like clockwork someone has a 'are my z560's blown?' post..

Fortunately Logitech seems pretty good about multiple replacements so that's good news.

I guess with these guys it's about a 50/50 chance of having a nice set of speakers that won't go. I've heard that the Logitech replacements usu. fair better than the originals (newer model revisions?) but even then it's about a 50/50 shot.. but that's down to a roughly 75% chance that you'll be ok.

I don't know. After all the horror stories from these I'd have to say they are great if you don't mind taking a risk but you almost always 'get what you pay for'

They'll blow if you constantly use them at high volumes because the amp actually maximizes the speakers. Therefore, if you push the speakers, they'll die eventually. They should still be under warrenty... Logitech should get your friend a new set because technically the THX spec calls for the limiter to kick in when the speakers are getting over worked.

Have to ask what the hell is he doing listening to music that loud anyway. I mean, you have to have the volume up pretty damn loud to get them to blow. :Q

Actually my speakers blew at a relatively low volume...I had had them turned up a lot louder previously, but the sub seemed to blow for no reason while I had them on at about 75% what I had previously cranked them up to. I hope my next pair is in the good half of the 50/50...

<< If I bought the speakers from Dell.com, and eventually have problems with them, do I contact logitech or dell about replacements parts? >>

I guess after 30 days Dell is not held liable for your product; therefore, you should contact Logitech.

<< but the sub seemed to blow for no reason while I had them on at about 75% what I had previously cranked them up to >>

. Well, that really doesn't surprise me because the amp on the Z560 does get pretty warm. If I bought those speakers, I'd make sure that large heatsink/heat dissipater got a lot of moving air. There seems to be a relatively high number of Z560 and PM 5.1 failures. The PM 5.1 failures come as a surprise to me due to the MOSFET technology that Klipsch implements.

Sucks. I live in Chico, CA, where it can get pretty hot...so I dont think there's anything I can do about the heat problem. Too bad I didn't know about this before I bought these.

"I only had this system for 3 weeks before it blew"

Don't you mean "I only had this system for 3 weeks before I blew it"

As long as you are using a line level input to your speakers and line level recordings then you should never blow them.

Another reason to purchase Klipsch. Sure they are more expensive, but for a reason. Quality.

"... logitech IS a quality brand"

Yeah but too bad we're not talking about mice and pointing-devices.

Well I wouldn't call it a loss if he can't listen to music then.
