So I gave in and bought an 32" LCD today just for the bedroom, nothing fancy. Just for games and DVDs but I was scrolling through the channels and I found some channels broadcasting in HD, but I'm not using a box, this is just straight coaxial from the wall...? I thought you had to have a box or antenna (for HD broadcasts) but I pulled up the info and the TV says it is receiving at 720p?

With cable and a QAM tuner you'll get unencrypted HD channels (usually just the major networks and PBS)

Your TV must have a built-in QAM tuner.

Well I believe that you need an HDMI cable to broadcast a HD signal to your tv but I could be wrong

You can get unencrypted HD channels both over the air (antenna) and through your cable provider. You do not need any special equipment or HDMI cables, so long as your TV has built in hardware support.

Bonus!

Well that's what I get for living under a rock for the past couple of years.

from wikipedia

A QAM tuner is a device present in some digital televisions and similar devices which enables direct reception of digital cable channels without the use of a set-top box. QAM stands for "quadrature amplitude modulation," the format by which digital cable channels are encoded and transmitted via cable. QAM tuners can be likened to the cable equivalent of an ATSC tuner which is required to receive over-the-air (OTA) digital channels broadcast by local television stations.

Nope. Plain old coax can do it.

And I bought a food dehydrator today. It was really great too, because then I went to the grocery store for some fruit, and they had some special on fully-ripened bananas. They were in special bags for $1 each. I think I wound up paying less than 20 cents per pound. Yay me.

Don't tell them that it's been done for 20 years using coax. Keep letting them think they need HDMI. ;)

Of course, it wasn't because I'm getting a check. It was just something I wanted. :)

All HDTVs sold now (except for some old close-out models) have QAM/ATSC tuners. Beyond that, it's all about image quality and number of other inputs.
