Upgraded to win2000 professional!! got my games working very well.. now I need links and stuff to win2000 for rookies! questions I have:

which is better the default directx7 or the new directx8?
what services do I need running, which can I do without? (networked PC)
how do I get motherboard monitor to work.. says something about needing Giveio service running?

any other tips and tricks are appreciated!

Get DirectX 8.0a it is the latest version and is available specifically for Win2k. As far as services are, I wouldn't really bother with those unless you are planning on actually managing a network. I dont know much about the motherboard monitor. For tips and tricks, nothing much i can offer other than you can host your own ftps and websites off IIS if you installed it

Make sure you check out the Internet Connection Wizard if you are having trouble with internet. If you are connected to a cable modem or anything that deals with a network card, try setting the internet as a LAN connection. The wizard is fairly easy to follow, and I've used it numerous times to setup different internet connections in both Win2k and WinME

thanks.. It really seems to be working well.. I did the upgrade even though others said I should do the full install seems to have gone fine.. gotta start learning the ropes now.

I had a network setup and it automatically set it up with my gateway IP and everything so I was on the internet right away no problems... Regalk how do you connect??

reg- are you letting your network card auto detect for you or do you have it configured manually or do you use dialup? if you use dialup i havent the slightest clue. if you are tweaking it manually goto the command prompt (start->run->cmd->enter) and type in ipconfig /all and see what comes up. see if the settings that are there are what you specified them to be. also try to see if your network card is properly installed. at the cmd prompt do ping localhost and see if you get a reply. is the comptuer behind a firewall or router? if so try hooking it up directly to your net connection and see what happens. 3 days is a long time to have a box offline: )
peace

hmmm.. well things were purring along fine.. then I started having trouble in delta force: Land Warrior.. random lockups.

so I decided to go to directX8...doesn't seem nearly as stable.. Land Warrior locks up more. and I get this when running dxdiag.

Error: Problem getting extra sound info, result code=0x8878000a(the request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

anyone have a clue what that means? 🙂

I also installed the VIA/microsoft updated agp patch, and the latest drivers for my sound card(sbpci512) from creative's site.
(did the sound driver update after getting the above error)
