I just transferred a batch of Barley Wine into the secondary and started steeping some grain for a batch of Paladin Porter. With a name like Paladin, it's got to be good!
Start a batch of brew!

I think if I were to ever start drinking, I'd probably drink a micro- or home-brewed beer. I like the idea of someone who actually cares about their product having complete control over it.

It's the perfect lazy man's hobby, a few hours to start a batch and nothing to do for at least a week. Then, a few minutes into the secondary and clean up with nothing to do for at least another week. Gotta love it! :)

Yea, we play darts and beer pong and whatever during the mash and boil. Gives my friends a chance to get away from their wives and hang out.

Once I get my garage project finished up, I'm going to be looking to get into the hobby.

Any links/books you can suggest for a n00b to the trade?

That's what I love about brewing, sharing with other people and saving them from the horrors of Bud/Coors/Miller etc.

Find a local Homebrew store, if you can. Invaluable, IMHO.

Check out a local brew supply shop if you have one. Local is always better and they're always happy to provide advice.

If nothing local try brewyourownbrew.com A typical starter kit runs about $70 bucks including your first batch of brew.

It is a fun hobby...I really enjoy making custome beers that I would never be able to find otherwise.

Unfortunately I discovered today I have brewed my first ever bad batch...its a porter I put into primary the other day that now smells like rotten fruit and tastes vile. :( Shame to see 5 gallons of beer end up that way...Still fun though.

Here are some links for those interested in getting started:
www.morebeer.com

www.northernbrewer.com

Both have full starter kits, books, and great forums for advice...

Another Helpful site:

www.byo.com

The "Clone Brews" books by Tess and Mark Szamatulski are also a good source. They give instructions for all grain, mini-mash and, all malt brewing.

"A Sip Through Time" is a good resource for out of the way herbal and 'witch brews.'

I've got some busy brew days in the works...

Paladin Porter is my own variation on Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Porter. "Sweet as a young lass' kiss and, black as a landlord's heart."

So, what brews have you got in the works?

I seem to recall a site with hundreds and hundreds of recipes, but I cannot remember it. IIRC, it was all text and looked like an ebook written in the 80s.
