I decided to wait for the K7T Turbo-R instead of the Pro2-A

I was going to get a Pro2-A with a Duron 800 to replace my P3B-F + Celeron 500 combo. However, I just got my hands on a Loctite-unlocked, blue core, week 51, 1GHz Tbird and I am too busy to upgrade in the next two weeks, so I decided I'll go with the K7T Turbo-R as it will be released about then. Going from Celeron to Tbird sweetness and doubling my MHz. :) Plus I probably will check if my Arctic Silver & FOP-32-1 can make this baby reach 1.2GHz.

rc5 cracking nirvana, here I come. :p

One thing though, the numbering on the chip (B on first line) indicates a 200MHz max FSB. Does that mean the 133 capability of the KT133A chip will not be used or will I be able to go for 7.5x133 instead of 10x100, and then o/c a bit?

chip numbering:

A1000 AMT3B
AJFA 0051 GPAW
Y592 097 0235

No, you will just need to drop the multiplier down and kick the FSB up to 133+. The new Thunderbirds that are going to be released are exactly the same as the 200mhz FSB chips, they just set them at the FAB for a 266mhz FSB...sort of like the P3 "E" and "EB" models..

You should be able to reach 1200 or higher. My 1 Ghz Tbird runs at 1200 just fine. For a while I was running it at 1248, but it was a bit unstable.

Floss, you should have no trouble with 7.5x133. Most 133A mobos have a jumper to set the base clock range at either 100 or 133. FSB increments of as small as 1 mhx, to as large as 5 mhz, vary by mobo manufacturer. PCI bus speed is likely to be an issue at 150mhz and above. This equals 37.5mhz PCI which starts to get flakey on some HDDs.

Was wondering how do the fsb affect your hard drive. I thought it only affected your pci cards and isa and agp?

PLease explain

Thankyou very much

IDE get's overclocked the same as the PCI bus.

df, that chip sounds suhweet, I'm also looking at upgrading my Duron soon, did the TBird come from Russ? I want to make sure I get a Dresden/copper CPU so I was considering waiting for the 1.1's to drop a little in price. But a copper 1 gig may be the best of all--performance and $$.

I have not looked at the specs on the K7T Pro Turbo, but just hope that it will allow you to underclock the multiplier below default processor speed. Unless there is a newer BIOS around that allows it, the Pro2A will not allow underclocking.

EDIT: I had to underclock my 1100 down to 800 to hit a stable 145 FSB.

Dennilfloss where did you find that blue core? Network Supply? OEM Express? I'm waiting for the Turbo-R too(have the K7T PRO now).

I cannot guarantee it but the core definitely looks blueish rather than greenish to me. Even if I see wrong, it should still smoke my Mendocino Celeron 500. :p Got it from (who else?) compuwiz1. :)

Dennilfloss,I don`t blame you for waiting, with RAID & 266mhz FSB it`s worth it.

Actually I am not impressed with the "improved" memory bandwidth on the KT133a. My Pro2 1.0B14 bios / Mushkin Rev3 / promise fasttrack 100 raid scores are pretty darn close the the kt133a.

Ihave to agree with you john on the improvment of the mem bandwith Im scoring 564/642 with my KT133. I was real close to putting order in for KT7A but I cant justify droping allmost $200 so I can run my FSB at 145 Instead of the 112 FSB that I am running now with KT133 just not worth it. I think I will run my KT133 for Awhile Intill prices fall And then try out the MSI Turbo Because it uses the Promise controler so I can set up a raid witch I dont have now.

John,You may be right,but it`s nice to have those options(266FSB & RAID).

It makes for an easier upgrade path later, particularly because of the lower multiplier needed to reach a certain speed. The pro2-A would need a very high multiplier to reach 1.5+GHz and I'm not sure that a bios fix will be available then to make it go to 15x. Plus I assume that some of the possible bugs mentioned for the Pro2-A will have been fixed in the Turbo. Should also come with a more recent bios straight on the CD. Convenient for people like me who don't like to flash their bios unless it's absolutely necessary.

It's not always about speed. ;)
