I decided I didn't want to pay the $15 processing fee for throwing away a microwave...

I disassembled it and put in in the garbage and recycling cans! Needless to say I'm feeling manly and clever... two traits that rarely go together!

:D

PS I can't wait until the wifey asks where the microwave went!

EDIT: the fee was $15 not $25 so I'm feeling slightly less clever.

Here all I would have to do is put the microwave on the curb with the rest of the trash and it would be gone. In fact that is exactly how I got rid of the last one.

What is this $25.00 processing fee that you speak of HomeBrewerDude?

Classic! Madison probably justs throws them all in the same pit as the rest of the garbage with or without the $25. My whole house remodel has been going out a week at a time. Bout 10 more weeks to
go till I am done.

Anything I want to get rid of gets tossed in my apartment complex dumpster.

That's crazy! Don't you know that if you take it apart that you'll release all the microwaves in one pop! That could destroy a small city! $15 doesn't seem like that much anymore, does it?

eyah its only $15 but seriously, the little effort I spent tearing it apart is probably about the same that I would spend making the money and chasing after the stupid sticker...plus I'm off to DC tomorrow and didn't want it sitting on the curb for another 8 days.

That's what I did with a 20' length of old carpet. I cut it into strips and stuck it into garbage bags and left it @ the curb every week for a few months. Totally wasn't worth the work.

That's kinda funny, since some recycler probably buys the microwaves from the city in bulk. They're making money on both ends of the deal!

Then again, local governments are quite often run by morons. In my county, the guy at the landfill has commented several times about the idiots who practically give away the bins of scrap metal. Each day, thousands of dollars worth of scrap metal are tossed in the recycling bin, and the county sells the bins for practically nothing. Still, I'm pretty surprised that they charge you for recycling anything, unless that recycling fee is for a special trip to your house to pick up the item.

1. Place micro wave on curb
2. Grab marker and paper
3. Make sign that reads---->I work and I'm free take ME
4. Watch first car stop and grab it.
5. Buy beer with the 15 bucks I told the wife I spent on the processing fee.
6. Profit...

I have great trash guys who come by every week. Many times I'll have 'stuff' that they are not supposed to take such as concrete blocks, microwave ovens, chain link fence, old motor oil, etc. A six pack of beer makes everything right with these guys! Obviously it would be wrong to give these illegals beer while driving and operating a highly sophesticated garbage truck, so instead of just giving it to them, we worked out a system where I would place the beer in a brown paper bag and set it on top of all the trash. Heck, I wonder if I can get rid of the wife this way? Might cost me two six packs!

I just load everything up in a pickup or on a trailer and bring it to the landfill. Landfill is maybe 10 minutes away and it is free to residents of my county to dispose of whatever we want.

But then again, the responsible thing to do is to recycle items that can be recycled rather than filling the landfill with more crap. The more landfills pile up, the more they'll have to find new areas to house another dump. :)

If my county offered any kind of said recycling (I already recycle aluminum, plastic, paper, glass, cardboard), I'd participate.

Well that sucks. I figured recycling programs for just about anything would be available country wide. My bad for not thinking outside of my county.

Private trash pickup FTW!
Heck, our company took an old hot water heater at no extra charge.
I think the majority of monitors I put out are gone before the trash man gets here though.
