I cut my own hair

Mostly because I'm cheap. I think the cost of men's haircuts has gotten outrageous, plus the barber/stylist expects a tip on top of it.

So I grab the clippers, put a #2 or #3 comb on them, and have at it. After the clippers, I trim around the ears as best I can with a pair of shears, shave the back of my neck. Done. After taking a shower sometimes I hit a spot or two that I missed.

Then it's always the same:
  • 3 weeks: Looks like shit, because it's too short, but it feels fantastic. Cool in the summer, not a hint of hat-hair in the winter. I'd cut my hair like this weekly ... if I lived alone in a cave on the side of a mountain.
  • 3 weeks: Looks great. Like I just got a good haircut.
  • 3 weeks: Gets progressively shaggier until it looks like shit again. Too thick on top, over the ears, down on my collar. Until I can't stand it and I bust out the clippers.

I do the same, and your descriptions are fairly accurate. I like that super clean first-3-weeks look though. Makes me look like I'm in the army when I'm really a desk-jockey. I'd guess that my soft body gives it away though.

Back of head trimming can be difficult.

What do you consider outrageous for a price? Around here I see places with cuts for $9, of course those are just pretty basic jobs, but they might make some happy.

I must be getting old, because I find I only need a haircut like twice a year now. So I just get it done at a barber shop down town, think it's only like 20 bucks.

I average a cut about every 3 weeks, $17.95 with tip.

My hair has gotten long enough in the last year I think I'm starting to look like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

Have been tempted to just shave my head awhile now.

Last year I bought a higher end set of clippers (Andis with a T outliner with it) and my wife does mine. I do a #0 every two weeks and shape my back, sideburns, etc. Clippers have paid for themselves 4 times over in a year

I went to Cathy for hair cuts for 20 years. When she stopped cutting hair I was lost. I would go somewhere and they would ask how I want my hair cut. I don't know, I would sit down, chat with Cathy for 30 minutes and my hair was cut. I got some horrible hair cuts and them bought my own cutter and have been cutting my own since then. 1/2" on top and 3/8" on the sides.

Haha I went to this place at the mall since I was a little kid, they closed down and I felt the same way, I did not really know where else to go. They mentioned a few places that the hair dressers were going to move to, so I just went to one of those, oddly have not met any of them yet it's all new staff but I know them decently now.

OP, they have clipper attachments for the left and right ear. And, you can take the attachment off to get that nice edge. My wife has cut my hair every time except once since we've been married.

And, to make you guys LOL:
We had one of those pairs of Oster (I think that's the brand) clippers - they're cheap. My wife had just started cutting my hair at about 10pm on a night before I had to work - and the clippers died.

So.... we have a set of clippers for the goats. We've been using the goat clippers on me for about 5 years now. (We have half a dozen sets of blades - I don't share the blades with the goats.) Fwiw though, the animal shears (used on our llamas and alpacas too, when we had them) cost a hell of a lot more than the clippers for humans.

A three week old haircut is fresh? I've gotten a haircut every week for eighteen years now, by the weekend it is not fresh anymore. It is funny how your perception changes!

I've paid for two hair cuts in the 38 years I've lived on this planet and already that was too much.

Go to the poor area of town where the poor and cheap get their hair done. Plenty of legit $8 salons and $5 and $6 haircuts being done under the counter at somebody's residence. Read somewhere that the majority owner/ founder of Ikea use to wait on hair cuts until he was traveling to a 3 world country on business where the haircut would cost next to nothing.

I've been cutting my own hair for at least 15 years. I start with clippers and a #3 guard for the whole head, then the right and left tapper guards around the ears, and a #2 to fade in around the back and sides. I finish up shaving my neck with no guard and have my daughter clean up in the back and make sure it's straight.

When my hair is freshly cut I don't even worry about it. Too short to comb, just wash and go. When it gets a bit longer I can put a little gel in it for a neat, semi-spiky look. If I let it go 5-6 weeks I just gel it back until it starts bugging me and I buzz it again.

My daughter has long beautiful hair on top with both sides of her head shaved. At first I wouldn't let her shave the sides, but she's 16 now and it looks good on her. I shave it for her with a #1 guard every 10-12 days.

Overall, cutting our own hair saves us a ton of money and we've gotten pretty good at it.

Like Doc Pizza, I had my first pair of clippers die on me mid hair cut and my wife had to run for a replacement pair while I waited with half a shaggy head. I think we are on our third set of clippers in 15 years and are currently using these inexpensive Wahl clippers from Walmart and they work great.

I cut my hair once a week. Clippers with no guard. I am too lazy to actually shave my head, and I have seen some really badly botched attempts from people so I just take the safer route.

I've been cutting my own hair for 30+ years. Every 5 years I let it go into a ponytail, leave it for a year or so then buzz it off. My hair grows like weeds. 50 years old and I have to shave every day and clip my hair every 2 weeks.

I get my haircut probably once every 2 months or so. I'm fine with spending ~$16 to bullshit with a decently good looking chick for 25 minutes while she cuts my hair and then takes out the handheld vibrating back massager thing to give my neck/shoulders a 2 or so minute massage. Unfortunately there's never been a happy ending ......

I was celebrating the fact that I am over 50 and I still have hair so I let it grow out. I gave myself a haircut with the #6 and 7 guards. Was going to wash the hair off and it did not feel quite right in the back so I gave it one last trim. Then I realized that I did not put the guard on and I gave myself a 4" stripe in the back. I panicked and then had some fun with it. I went up to my wife and asked if it was even in the back and turned around. The gasp she let out was awesome. She then said it was horrible, which kind of ruined the awesomeness. I gave myself a 1/8" shave and still had the remnants of a stripe in the back. I don't care about going out in public like that, I can put on a hat. But my work can be pretty brutal about things like that. Fortunately it must have grown back enough because no one called me stripe boy. Although I did get a lot of comments about my buzz cut.
