I would like to ask if Windows Anti-Spyware beta is worth using? I currently have no anti-spyware and is looking for a good free anti-spyware, before I am using lavasoft and spybot search and destroy.

Yes, get it. Along with:
- Spybot Search and Destroy (be sure to use the immunize feature)
- Spywareblaster
- Adware
- AVG free edition

All of these are free. AVG is a free anti-viri program that everyone should use.

Basically what I use. Instead I use AntiVir instead of AVG and have Kerio v215 as a FW.

Great list of progs.

Unlike all the others here, I am against MSAS. Here's my personal rant on it:

Special Note:
Microsoft AntiSpyware Program:
Because of recent changes in the way this program now defines and detects spyware/adware, it is no longer recommended as a spyware removal tool. Microsoft has downgraded several adware/spyware programs that it used to detect and remove and now lists them simply as ?Ignore?

These are some of the adware/spyware programs that this program will NOT prompt you to remove. Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, most WhenU apps, eZula,TopText, Gain/Gator, and Webhancer. These are all known adware/spyware programs and hijackers. Basically this product can no longer be trusted. We recommend you uninstall it.

Funny because I just had MSASB remove 180solutions from my friends computer last night. I was cleaning it for him. Maybe if you provided some links or just any kind of basis for the claim...maybe that might help.

Exact same setup I have BW. I d/l'ed Mikersoft AS and tried it for a day but didn't care too much for it. It seemed to call home a lot, something I don't like any app doing. Spybot S&D and Adaware do plenty enough for what limited stuff I do on the net (no pron, crack sites, etc.)

I've had to uninstall the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program (now called Windows Defender) on a few computers, since it caused noticable sand annoying slow downs.

I usually just run Anti-Vir (great free antivirus program), and run an Adaware scan once a week.

The new version 7 of AntiVir is sweet. Takes very few resources, and auto-updates. I highly recommend it. Much better than AVG.

Limited account > * when it comes to spyware prevention. Spyware removal, sure, grab the whole list including MSAS Beta. Although my favorite spyware-removal tool is Windows Setup...

Limited accounts have no performance hit. No signature updates. No license fees (beyond what Windows itself costs). No nag screens. Add an antivirus software, routine patching of the OS and programs, and enough common sense to avoid Trojan-bearing warez/etc. That's all we use on the ~65 PCs where I work. I provide 100% of the needed common sense, being the only guy with Admin powers ;)

If tracking cookies get you upset, however, then you might want to resort to SpywareBlaster, and modify your browser's Cookie settings. I just set IE's privacy setting to Medium-High as a machine-wide policy myself.
