I currently have a Abit BX6 rev.1 motherboard with a Celery 400 . I am looking to get a faster processor for this machine . Any recommendations on a good CPU which can be OCed with the BX6 rev.1.

I would suggest a P3-700 stepping cC0. You should get a guaranteed overclocked at 933 (133FSB) using an MSI v2.3 slocket. Check with Compuwiz1 in this forum or go to www.outsideloop.com and e-mail Bill, either way your BX6 (not BM6 right?) should handle it assuming you flash your BIOS to the latest revision from Abit.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your inquiry. I don't recall the exact specs of the BX6 Rev. 1
but I don't think it has a 1/4 PCI divider, so running at 124mhz or 133mhz
is probably not a viable solution. (If I'm wrong about this assumption,
then one of the 700E cC0 processors that we currently have will work well).

With your current hardware I would recommend getting an 800 or 850 and
clocking it using using the 112mhz fsb available on your board.

Bill is right about the PCI divider, but that doesn't mean that a 700@933 won't work. The key is whether the rest of your peripherals can run at the higher PCI bus, specially the hard drive. But looking at your Seagate I think it would work. If you don't want to take the chance then a P-3 800 will do nicely for the money (around $176).

ugh, I was kinda wishing a celery 566 OCed a bit would be a solution :)......... is there a voltage issue with coppermines on the old bx boards ?

maxcom: I have the bx6 1.0 mobo. I'm running a Celeron 2 566 @877 with no problems for the last few months. I use a Iwill slocket 2 with it. This is probably the cheapest upgrade you can make. I had a Celeron 366 @550 before this celeron 2 and the difference is huge. Games are much, much faster now. Shouldn't cost you more then about $70 bucks for the chip and the slocket. If you have any more questions email me. I love the bx6 1.0. I've had it for almost 3 years now, and it keeps on going and upgrading!

Nope, i have old bios, a few versions ago. It doesn't seem to matter since the multiplier is locked.

I have this particular motherboard. There isn't much you can do with it as far as overclocking. Check Abit's site (www.abit-usa.com) to see what processors it is capable of handling, because it won't go very high (400mhz PIII if I remember correctly.)

Actually Abit states a PIII 600 is tops with current bios :) but we know better :)

From the abit website, BX6 product page:

1. Supports Pentium®II 350~450MHz processors cartridge (based on 100MHz clock). 2.Supports Pentium®II 233~333MHz processors cartridge (based on 66MHz clock). 3.Supports Celeron® 266~333MHz processor cartridge (Based on 66MHz clock)

where jo0 see 600mhz? :) or am I on crack?

um,they have this thing called a bios update :),I suspect you're looking at the original specs when the board was introduced. I doubt you're "on crack", a bit green maybe :)Try clicking on "downloads" then "bios update" then "bx6".....have fun!

You have to look in the BIOS upgrades section, it says with the latest upgrade the newer processors it supports. I think you were looking at the original release specs.

Oh damn.

Now that's piss poor website design if I've ever seen it. I mean, why wouldn't they update the PRODUCT page??

And, I'm on crack.
