does the FIC AZ11 allow you to adjust the multiplier. I'm interested in overclocking a duron 600 to either 900 or 1Ghz, and need to know what the cheapest halfway decent board i can do it on, preferably around the $100 range.

I don't think it does, and if it's anything like the SD11 was, $100 would be overpaying by about $99. Here are the specs.

I was at a retail store that let me look at one. There is a place on the board that looks as if a nice little row of dip switches had been removed or better described as an empty slot for several dip switches. I asked the people who work there if you could adjust the multiplies on the board or in the bios, and they told me no. The Abit or Asus hadn't made it to market yet, but they told me to wait for either one of these. I think that the best cheap board for socket a is the MSI. Even though it doesn't support multiplier adjustments it is supposed to be rock solid. I think these are the mobos that actually run these forums and some other parts of the Anandtech realm.

Assuming you intend to crack RC5, you need to get an Abit KT7 (skip the RAID option) or an ASUS A7V if you want to overclock a Duron. Asus has one less PCI slot, perhaps a better rep than Abit. Abit MB appears to be of better quality than some of their BX efforts, full jumperless overclocking. You can probably get one shipped for $145 or so. Anand has done reviews of each, both got an 8.5.

If you're not planning to crack, then you're not allowed to use this advice. :p

Edit: Forgot to add, if I was $45 short on buying an Asus MB, I'd sell my mother on a streetcorner to raise the money before buying an FIC. Just my opinion, however. :)

Yes you can overclock on the AZ-11. I dont know how(I THINK you have to solder dip switches on the mobo)for sure though.

<< We've yet to see any KT133 boards available with the ability to unlock the multiplier of AMD's Socket-A CPU's, but if such a feature does come to market, it will be sorely missed on the AZ-11 by all overclockers. We have discovered a method to enable it on the AZ-11, but it's not for the faint of heart and we highly recommend that users interested in overclocking via the multiplier choose a board with built-in support for that feature. >>

This is taken from the review of the AZ-11 on the main page of Anandtech.

Tom's hardware site and probably a few others have info on how to mod a mobo to be able to OC.

I don't know of anyone that has modded an AZ11, but in theory it can be done.

I considered doing so, but decided to get the A7V. (I'm not that good with a soldering iron :) )

Yeah, the consensus has it that you will pay about ~150 to o/c the x on/board. Currently only asus and abit, not fic. However...I will attempt a hard mod on the duron, it has been done by others, and they are cheap enough that if it works it is worth the risk. The parts are ordered...
Holding my breath...
