HI.

The reason I connected the SMC 7004BR router to my wireless US Robotics router is because the print server on the USR router didn't work with my HP 4L printer. I had read that the SMC router DID work with the printer.

Now when I try to access the USR configuration utility/software by typing 192.168.123.254 into the browser address bar I get the config utility for the SMC router. The problem with that is my modem is connected to my US Robotics router and now it won't dial out.

I know I must have left something out in my desription of my problem (and that's because I don't know enough about networking to explain the problem in it's entirety).

If you have any suggestions or questions I look forward to them.

Thank you.

teh 2 routers are probably conflicting. try this:

with the SMC by its self on a lan login to it and turn off dhcp, and give it a static ip address that's different from all others on your lan.

connect it to you lan but don'r use the WAN port just connect it switch to switch. that should work making the smc act as a print server only, and not try to hand out addresses.

Thanks for the replies!

The IP address on my USR wireless router is: 192.168.123.254
The IP range is 192.168.123.100 to 192.168.123.199

I logged onto the SMC utility and disabled DHCP then I changed the IP to static and gave it the address: 192.168.123.300 ------ I then received an error message that said the 'IP Address in invalid.'

Any idea where I am going wrong?

Thanks.

300 is out of the range. the functional range is:

192.168.123.1 - 192.168.123.254

Note. 8bits is 2 in the power of 8=256 i.e 0-255 is 256 numbers.

I changed the SMC IP address to 192.168.123.1 and I think I was able to save that. Then I tried to print through the SMC but it didn't work.

When I tried to add the printer (via "Add Standard TACP/IP Printer Port Wizard") an error message occured that said the 'Address is not correct or the device is not properly configured.'

Any ideas?

SMC has FAQ about the printer connection. Try to locate it on SMC.com

from smc.com

Why doesn't my computer Print to the Barricade Print server?
Make sure you have installed the printer drivers as if the printer was connected directly to the printer.

1. Install the "PRTmate" software off of the Barricade CD-ROM.
2. Go to Control Panel and open up your Printers folder. Right click on your printer and select "Properties".
3. Select the details tab, under "Print to the following port" make sure "PRTmate" is selected.
4. Check the "Spool Settings" button to make sure that you have the "disable bi-directional support for this printer" box checked. If these options are grayed out please disregard this step.
5. Last, double check the "port settings" to see that the IP address set is the same as your Barricade (default: 192.168.123.254).

Thanks mcveigh. In another page of the smc site it specifically says to use the TCP/IP port. Also, my cd didn't come with the PRT Mate software.

Thank you. I'll keep after this for a few more days.
