I?m building a computer for my girl because hers has completely died. She wants a workstation predominately for school, but wants to play the Sims 2 on it as well. (She has very little money). I?m submerged in a heavy school semester and don?t have time to look into all the specifics. My biggest questions are on those of onboard video quality and CPU quality in respects to what she will be using it for.

The first system I had on order:

MSI k7n2gm2 MB (GeForce 4 MX video)
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton
512mb Corsair DDR 333 RAM
Computer case & floppy drive
Total: $284.sumthin

After I ordered this system I scrolled down on new eggs CPU page a couple more clicks and found an Athlon 64 2800+ for only $8 more. But I wasn?t as happy with my motherboard selection.

Nonetheless I canceled the first order and went with the following one:

BIOSTAR GEFORCE 6100-M7 MB (GeForce 6100 video)
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ ClawHammer
512mb Corsair DDR 400 RAM
Computer case & floppy drive
Total: 282.sumthin

So she paid two dollars less for a system that has a better processor, faster memory, and better onboard video. (am I correct in these assumptions)

She has no more money, so more expensive options just weren?t an option. She already overspent. Nor where buying things off of eBay and alike, as I just don?t have the time to mess with all that.

She?s upgrading from a P3 800mhz system with 256mb PC100 RAM, (integrated video.) And she use to be happy with how this machine would play the Sims 1. So she?s not quite as picky on frame rate as a typical gamer.

Anyway the system is on order already so I just want you guys to tell me if I made the right decision. My biggest concern is going with Biostar MB over MSI MB. Will this system be enough to get her through a few years of school and play the Sims 2, lemonade tycoon, and maybe even the next generation of all those crapy games?

IMO, its more than enough. Maybe You should have gotten a Sempron 2800 and overclocked it to 1.8GHZ (very minor oc). Costs only around 70 bucks and should save you some cash.....

I second Hacp, you should have gotten her the new Sempron 2800+ 64-bit chip instead of that A64. She would never notice the little difference in speed and you'd have saved her another $50.

But i'm sure she'd be happy either way. :)
