I changed my E: drive to C: Worst decision ever!

My uncle installed a new hard drive to replace my parent's HDD on their computer when it died. However, it was labeled E which wasn't a problem until I tried updating some stuff and it wouldn't install because there was no C drive.

I followed the instructions on Microsoft's site to edit the registry to switch the drive name(It wouldn't let me do it the normal way). I made the E: into C:

So windows would never pass the login screen and would never go to desktop, just a black screen. Even in Safe Mode.

I used the Winxp disc to repair WIndows and the change was a success(except the drive was named po C: for some weird reason). Anyway, now the thing is going bonkers becuase the directory is changed and always asking me for driver locations.

I just reversed the Regedit I did and now it claims the paging file isn't there and won't load up, but simply shuts down and goes back to the login screen.

What should I do to make the drive C: and not run into this kooky ass problem? I can repair windows again, but I'd like it to be the C: Drive.

Personally, I think you would be a lot better off by doing a fresh XP install and just importing documents, email .dbx folders, etc. (and reinstalling programs). But thats me.

If you would rather try to fix this issue, you need to look at the following web page article from MS.

Edit:Create a BartPE bootable CD, which will enable you to edit the registry on your broken PC. Here's how to do that:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Now, once you have created it, you need to edit the registry on your broken pc with BartPE:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm

That tells you how you can edit. What to edit?

Note that since this was written for Windows 2000, you will NOT use "Winnt\System32" but rather "Windows\System32" where you see those references.

Strange.....the problem fixed itself after repairing windows the third time.....and it's the c drive this time!

Weird....but thanks for the help though....
