I Changed my 6800GT's BIOS

Hey, if anyone out there was pondering changing their 6800GT BIOS to an Ultra BIOS, I don't really recommend it. Unless, you are like me and just LOVE seing "6800 Ultra" in windows. It actually hurts your performance, this is a known fact. Lowers your RAM timings. So, if you want more performance I would Vmod your GT BIOS to 1.4v (ultra vcore, gt is 1.3). google it and you will find out how. pretty easy.
anyway, one thing is that i'm getting boarderline temps...they go up to 85C in RTHDRIBL, and even a spike to 90C :S. 3DMark05 was at about 75C, more realistic temps then RTHDRIBL. I was thinking on taking off the heatsink, replacing it with an EVGA Copper cooler, and putting some AS on the GPU and Ram. That should bring my temps down maybe 10C, you think? Or should I go with the AS5?
just wanted to share my experence with you 😀

An Arctic Cooling NV5 Silencer would be better. It should both cool better and be quieter. Takes up two slots though, but since it exhausts the hot air, its a good thing.

oh, ive read some reviews that mostly said the NV5 lowered the noise level in their case, but the temps stayed around the same. is the nv5 copper? ok, when the case is upright, does the NV5 take the slot ABOVE the graphics card, or below it? i have a huge Antec server case, but in the slot above my graphics card i have the little port thingy 🙁

The Silencer takes up the slot below the card. It has a copper plate with aluminum fins and is much quieter than the hairdryer BFG uses and performs better.

All along members here have just recommended to overclock the GT using cool bits - all you did was prove why we did.

You can just edit the stupid BIOS to make it display "6800 ultra" as a matter of fact you can make it say anything you want.

The other thing that is important to remember is that the boards for the GT and Ultra are different.

Lower RAM timings wont be a bad thing if you set the RAM for a higher frequency.

In any case flashing to Ultra and running at those speeds including RAM frequency will not hurt your performance due to latency. THINK about it youre making your chip behave as a chip that is better than your chip.... the problem may occur because your RAM wont run those speeds or because of the difference in board architecture.

The Ultra and GT are the EXACT same card and chip, the Ultra just has both molex connectors soldered in and runs faster, beefier heatsink, blah blah blah.

WOW that is the kewlest kewler ever! too bad i dont wanna spend that much money. thx thugs for those stats, btw. mine should be a bit higher because im running at 1.4v. are you using 1.3v? im happy with the performance, i havent tried overclocking using the new BIOS yet, and i can always flash back to my original...i backed it up cuz im smart 😀
thats good about the NV5 MDE, ill diffenately look into that *thumbsup*

oh, wow your temps are alot lower than mine....ill look into what im doing wrong. what speeds are you running at? and you are using a 6800LE?!?! softmod/diff bios/overclocked?!?! holy shiznat...you saved about 300 bucks?

edit: on my tests, i try to get the temps as high as possible. so i turn on every setting to the most gpu intensive possible, fullscreen. how are you testing your temps?

its a Limited Edition Ultra (not a low end Limited Edition 6800), i saved about $200 😉

the card is 100% Ultra except i use a Gainward GS GT vid bios for better performance.
it has a reference Ultra cooler, but i replaced the HS with the eVGA solid copper unit.

my temps are nice and low and using only 60% fan speed 😀

oh, i see. dont LE ultras run at higher speeds? so you are 400/1000?
i wonder why my temps suck...i have 4 case fans, 2 psu fans...?
