I can't tell whether my motherboard or videocard was fried.

Hi,

I have an Asus A8N-SLI w/ AMD3200+
Asus 7900GT top

haven't use this pc for a week or so because of business trip.

today i turned it on, but nothing happen the monitor says "no signal" (Viewsonic LCD, working)

it seems dead,
but after i open the case i see some clues.

When i press the power button, everything inside seems working and loading.
the harddrive will begin running, chassis fans running, videocard fan running, green light on motherboard is on(lower middle)
but just nothing showing on the monitor.

my logitech G5 mouse's light is not on(the little sensitive indicator). It should be on once i press the power button.

i have tried to clear the bios (Clear RTC), but no use.

Please help out if my motherboard is fried? or videocard?
what can i do to bring it back if they aren't fried.

Thank you in advance

Do you see the hard drive light running as if though the hard drive is loading windows? Have you tried to reseat the memory, video card, and PCI cards?

i guess the harddrive is running. I mean the light did flash a few times.
I can't even see the screen, not even the bios setting (ask you to press del to go into bios setup), i can't see that either.

the screen just saying "no signal" and that's it, no matter i turn on or turn off the PC, it just won't make a difference...

one more thing...
when i press the power button, it will begin loading, but when i press it again, it will turn down the whole PC within 1 second.
if it is running windows or any applications, it won't shut down that quick.

The only way to make sure is to get hold of a video card from somewhere else and try it in your PC or conversely, try your video card in someone else's PC. That'd make it easy for you to figure out what's gotten screwed.

Check your video cable connection. Even when you plug it into an off computer, the screen should go blank. Something is wrong with the cable or the connection. Your monitor thinks that it's not connected to anything. Your computer is not getting pass POST. That's why it shuts down that quickly.

you mean the videocard isn't receiving signal from the dvi cable so it can't get a PASS signal so it can shut down that quick?

i will try to put my videocard onto another pc to test it tonite

No, I meant that the monitor is not receiving a signal from the video card. Before the problem started, what did your monitor display when your computer is off? The monitor should displays the same thing now when your computer is off. If it's not, then it's either the graphic card or the connection between the graphic card and the monitor. Most monitors that I have seen do not display a "no signal" message when they are plugged into the computer(even when the computer is off). The fact that yours said "no signal" tell me that there is a bad connection between the monitor and computer.
Your computer shuts down quickly because it cannot get pass POST or it has problem booting into windows.

I would unplug the monitor, and try again. My LCD has failed twice to power up, giving the same "no signal" message. I turned off my 6 plug protection grid when the no signal message was displayed and then turned it back on. When I started the pc, the LCD worked fine. Mine has an external power converter.

if the video connection is failed, it shouldn't have a signal bounce back to the PC saying a failure occured to prevent a bootup to windows.
Cuz years ago the cable was loosen, the LCD say no signal for 10 seconds then it went back to standby mode. but once i plug the cable back in again it will show whereever it should be at that moment.

i have tried the videocard on a different PC, the videocard is working perfectly.

Now i am seeking a way to reset the whole motherboard and see what happened.

"if the video connection is failed, it shouldn't have a signal bounce back to the PC saying a failure occured to prevent a bootup to windows."

I believe that to be incorrect. The message that states you are not receiving a signal obviously doesn't come from your PC, it comes from the monitor itself. That message will only come up when there is a bad connection from your monitor to your PC.

I am about 85% certain on this. So continue to ask around, perhaps I'm wrong.

oh, i am confused.
when the monitor is saying "no signal", i guess it really has no data or what so ever sending through the cable to the monitor. therefore it will say no signal, and i guess that's it. I mean it won't send data back to the bios and preventing a bootup.. (i know until you login to the windows, it will detect whether you have a connection to a monitor).. of course i could be wrong.. I make mistake all the time =)

i found one more clue..
when the PC is shut down. the monitor obviously should say no signal(or in standby mode) and this is true. but when i turn on it on, the monitor should have some response., or saying no signal (wake up from standby mode). but it won't .. it stays in standby mode.

JimiP, really appreciated from your help... anaylizing for me.. thank you
