I can't stand it anymore

I have had this breathing problem for quite a while now (4 years). It happened suddenly while I was in 8th grade (I'm a freshman in college now). I just woke up one day, and during the ride to school, I suddenly noticed that I had trouble getting air. I didn't feel any sharp pains or anything, nor was I turning bluish. It's just that whenever I would breathe in, I would not register the oxygen reaching my lungs until the very apex of a deep breath. So if I were to breath normally I would just gradually lose air until I would need to take a deep breathe, all the while not feeling any relief until then. I don't smoke or drink. I went to see two doctors and one of em said it's all in my head and the other one said if I wasn't dead yet then it's probably not going to kill me. Basically, live with it. He did recommend getting some excercise so I started running and ran 2 miles a day for about a year and a half. It helped a little bit but I still don't register air until the very end of each breath. It feels like theres a huge mountain in the way and unless I breathe in enough air to overcome this slope, I would get virtually no oxygen and no relief. I did get my blood tested and an echocardiogram. Both were normal. Someone help me T_T

How do you "register air reaching your lungs"? You're not supposed to feel it, unless it's cold or something.

I guess I meant relief. Like how you feel after you hold your breath for a while then breathe in.

Are you fat?

I was out of shape at one point and yes I have some flab but like I said, I've ran 2 miles nonstop for about a year and a half. I'm 6'0 180lbs atm, so no I'm not that fat.

I used to have the same problem. I could see how it could've been all in my head but I think anxiety could cause it also. However I've never had a very good lung capacity, even when I used to exercise all of the time. I'd go running with people and always be the one gasping for air. Maybe ours lungs just suck.

That still makes no sense, but whatever.

You've seen two doctors, who told you it's no big deal. See a third one, or cope.

I went to some lung specialist and got tested. He said my lung capacity is 20% above average. I sure as hell don't feel that way atm.

I've been coping, but at times it bugs the hell out of me.

well, your fears of anything being wrong with your lungs should be laid to rest.

seriously, my brother had an anxiety attack just like you are describing. if you want to keep dwelling on it you will work yourself up enough to need medicine.

relax. the exercising is a great idea - i agree with the doc who prescribed it.

Four year anxiety attack? I hope thats not the case T__T That or I'm anxious all the time and don't realize it.
it's been going on constantly for four years? :Q

i think you are making yourself more anxious. ever tried relaxation techniques - especially helpful when you are having an attack.

what possibly else could you think is wrong with you? you've been doctored to death about it it seems.

I know EXACTLY how you feel, I have had that exact problem for the last 10-15 years....I've tried explaining it to doctors to no avail as well....I just deal with it now. I dont think about it often anymore but my gf will often ask my why im taking such deep breaths... but i agree, it is veeeeeeeery irritating

I don't drink -___-; But I did entertain this theory for a while.

When I was running in middle school (gym class), I would get low on air and have to slow down or walk. But after running for a while and pushing myself, I found the amount of air I would get per breath had increased significantly.. enough to cover how much I lost. I'm thinking I reverted somehow and my brain can't take the reduction. Still doesn't explain why I only feel relief (slight) at the end of each breath.
