Hey guys,
I have an external hard drive enclosure, which i put in an old WD 40GB hard drive. I connected it to my laptop via firewire, and was ale to browse the files on the HD with no problem.
I realized they were all old files that I didn't need anymore, so I decided to go ahead and reformat the drive. I right clicked on it from my computer and went to reformat. did a Quick format, and got the message "Windows was unable to complete the format".
Now, the drive shows as busy (red led on) I can't find it in my computer, and has an exclimation point listed on it under device manager (in fact, all the symptons described in kb 885464 are present: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885464
I contacted microsoft and obtained the hotfix, but the problem is still there. I vertified that the driver is the same date and size as listed in the kb article.
I tried doing a full (non-quick) format, and it'll go all the way to 100% before giving me the error.
The firewire chipset is a Prolific PL3507, and I heard flashing the ROM to a newer version may help, but I cannot find instructions on how to do it. I also heard of a 128kb transfer limit or something similar to it, but I'm not sure if that would affect me reformating the drive.
