I can't network worth brick

OK guys, seeing as how you here at anandtech are like the smartest computer guys around, I was hoping you could help me. Basically we're (my friend and I) just trying to network TWO computers, seems easy enough right? (Especially since he's currently in a networking class for college and his final is monday) We got as far as seeing the lights light up on the hub and we could see our own computers on the "Network Neighborhood" but we couldn't see the other computer.

We changed it to the same workgroup and we also tried to manually "find" eachother's computers by computer name but no matter what we tried we fffffailed. Any ideas as to why we couldn't see eachother's computer but could see our own?

Two things to check. First, did you remember to login to each system upon booting in to Windows? Second, have you enabled sharing on both systems?

Ohhhhhh, nice thinking russ. We almost quit before realizing you have to share the computers. So sharing is a check but I'm not 100% sure what your other question is....can you explain?

Go in to network properties and click the tab that says "file and print sharing". Check the boxes that say "I want to, blah, blah". Than reboot.

Can they ping each other? Check the ips to make sure you dont have a typo or something.

Ah yes, I do recall making such modifications actually. I'll be sure and check if that's the problem but if I already did change it (which I think I did) what else could be wrong?

OOPS, I read your post too fast. When you first boot in to Windows, you should have a login screen where you enter user name and password.

In order to try a ping, he'll need the know the IP addresses assigned to the NIC's.

FAQ,

Start/run/winipcfg will show you the address of the card on each system. Than to try a ping: start/programs/DOS prompt. At the prompt try to ping the other system using the IP address you get with winipcfg.

Both computers do this (no password was entered tough if that means anything)

You are not logged on if you don't enter a password unless, as I do, you have your systems setup to logon automatically.

A ping tells you if the computers are capable of communicating with each other. If they are, you'll get a response that shows you the speed in ms.

Mind you, I can see my own computer on NN and I didn't use a password

Also, make sure that both PC's have the same Workgroup name.

Me and my friend have the exact same problem. Could it be a hardware problem? We can see ourselves but not the other computer. When I try to ping the other computer, it says "request timed out". Anyone have any other suggestions?

We're out of ideas....

you did not set both pcs to have the same ip addy, did you?

and make sure the sharing is bound to something, like TCP\IP or netbui or whatever... should be with a proper installation...
