I can't MUTE Line-in

I am trying to get my mic setup on my new rig. It's a gigabyte ep45-ud3r mobo with the realtek alc889a on board sound chip. I have plugged the mic into the pink connector in the back and it works. However, I'm getting sound coming from the mic back thru the speakers.

I have tried muting line-in like I have always done in the past but nothing is working. I have tried all the combinations from "control panel sound/audio" to the Realtek driver control in tray to "manage" drivers. Nothing is working.

Is there a bug in this realtek chipset? This is driving me nuts.

Please help.

Are you using the latest Readtek drivers from the site? Once you've got them downloaded and installed, with the mic plugged in the control panel of the Realtek driver will have a section for microphone adjustments. Mine had 2 sliders, one which controlled how loud the input would be, and the other how loud the output feedback would be (muted mine, I don't need to hear myself talking afterall). Give it a shot.

Late last night I downloaded the latest realtek drivers from gigabyte. They were the SAME version as the ones already installed. However, when I reinstalled them, the line-in echo went away and the mic worked fine. But the Line-In button was still unmuted so it should have not worked. I don't want mess around with it any more as it is working now.

Either the install was bad or either (a higher possiblility) Adobe Premier Elements 7 messed up the mic settings real bad at a low level. That program has tons of bugs in it and it really messes alot of things up.

thanks for the responses

That's a possibility but the realtek drivers from the realtek website are just the low level drivers. They do not include the Gigabyte front end. So it could be Gigabytes problem and not Realtek.

Like I said, it messed up but it's working. So I'm not going to mess with it. Realtek did just update their drivers (dec 08). I'll install them if the mic becomes unusable again.

Agreed. Realtek updates their drivers VERY often (I wonder why they do as often as they do sometimes).

Realtek audio drivers are also the only ones I've ever had where I played a game with no updates for a few weeks (Eve Online), I hadn't changed the audio driver in months, yet one day certain sounds would cause a crash to desktop. I was able to repeat the problem reliably over and over (The sound of a laser firing or somesuch as I recall). Updating with the latest driver from the Realtek page made the problem go away.

Anyways, definitely would recommend the Realtek website drivers, as mobo manufacturer drivers can be between somewhat to very out of date in comparison.

You must have just downloaded the drivers only. Find the application files that go with that product. They propably have two downloads, a driver set and a application set.
