Practice practice practice.

Oh, and the right car helps emmensely. I learned to drive on a 5 speed ranger with no power steering I absolutely HATED parallel parking that thing because of the energy it took to crank the wheel.

When I got an itty bitty little automatic grand am, parallel parking became a whole lot easier.

Practice all you want but that won't help. I once watched some lady try for about 30 minutes trying to parallel park and she finally gave up and drove away when she saw the crowd that had gathered to laugh at her.

You need to understand the concept first. When backing, the car turns on the axis of the rear wheels. So just think of it as driving with the back wheels steering (even though they don't turn as such)

It's really easy:

1. Look for the spot you want on the side of oncoming traffic.
2. Hit the accelerator.
3. Just before the front of the car comes to the front of the parking spot turn the wheel sharply 90º to the left and quickly pull the parking brake.

I got the same problem. I need to work on knowing the amount to turn to the right to get in the stall.

Parallel parking is easy (really!), and practice is the only way to get there. It's just a matter of learning how the physical position of your car looks from the driver's viewpoint. :)

Bigger cars are more difficult, just because there is so much more mass and more hidden area behind you.

1) Line up your back bumper with the back bumper of the car that will be ahead of you when you pull in. Also, make sure to be about 2 feet away.
2) Turn the wheel all the way to the right as you're backing up.
3) When you reach a 45 degree angle with the curb, straighten out the wheel.
4) Then begin to turn the wheel to the left to get the car straight.
5) When you're in the spot, straighten out the wheel.
6) Pull up a little bit, then back, just so the car is nice and straight in the spot and so you and the other cars have room to get in/out.

Of course, I was a natural at parallel parking, so... ;)
