I can't install video drivers for my GeForce!

Good Evening,

Here is my situation: I am running a Celeron 300a @ 450 with a Riva TNT based card (the Creative Labs one). I am running my system with Windows 2000 Professional. When I first install Win2k, the OS automatically detects my card and installs the driver that comes with the CD.

Now, whenever I try and download and install either the Creative Labs driver that is on their website, or some version of Nvidia's Detonator driver, I download it, double-click on it for it to install, and I restart when it asks me to. What happens then is that my machine reboots, and when Win2k comes back up, I am in a 640x480 16-color mode (in other words, VGA). So, I'm thinking that I have to change the resolution, no biggy. That's where the problem comes.

I right-click on my Desktop, click on "Properties", then as I click on the "Settings" tab, Win2k goes into a Blue Screen of Death, one in which I cannot get out of. The error message says something about having problems with VGA.DLL. It does this every time after I restart my computer (due to the crash), and the only way to fix it is to go back to my old driver that was initially installed. I have reformatted Win2k about 4 times in the past 3 weeks, and the same thing happens each time, so it's definitely not a software issue, but a hardware one, I'm guessing.

So, I decide to purchase a GeForce2 GTS chipped card, namely the Creative Labs one. I pop that sucker in, and install the driver that came with my card. Looks like it's working, so far, so good. Now, I go on the 'net and try downloading Nvidia's detonator driver (v6.31 to be exact), and I install it as the readme says. Boom, same thing happens, when I click on the 'settings' tab in Properties, the same VGA.DLL blue screen of death message comes.

I really think something is wrong with my motherboard. I plan on buying a new system in the next few weeks, so hopefully that will fix it, but for the time being, I am going nuts trying to find the problem. Can anyone please help me figure this out, or do any of you have any good advice or suggestions?

Many thanks in advance.

to change drivers in win 2k go to display properties, settings tab, advanced button. then adapter tab, properties button, driver tab, update driver.

just checking... before deciding its the motherboard perhaps you should try an ATi, 3dfx, or matrox board. or perhaps its a 6.31 driver issue. nvidia drivers aren't the least buggy.

Well, I've also tried installing Creative's own drivers, which I download from their website. The same thing happens.

I've had some problems before too. I don't like the way the update process works with NVidia drivers in W2K. Check out something like 3dgpu, sometimes they have info. I remember I had to remove something in the registry to get it to work. Not too sure though...

Try removing hardware from the control panel, then when asked to find drivers hit cancel, you will then go in the old "16 color" mode and then from there do the "change adapter" path. I had a similar problem with my Win2K install and that was what I needed to correct it.
Good luck

1) Download the 6.47 drivers from 3D Chipsetand unzip the to a specified directory.

2) Go to the control panel and UNINSTALL any old video drivers, which I assume should only be the nVidia detonators. It will then prompt you to reboot.

3) When you log on it will bring up the hardware wizard for your video card. Point it to the directory you unzipped the drivers to and double click the nv4_disp.inf and choose the GF2 GTS.

4) Finish the wizard and reboot.

Do not use the .exe file...do it manually.

make sure that you don't have multiple drivers for the display adapter in safe mode......
