I cant install ubuntu on old PC, "failed to locate cdrom device"

I made an iso cd and when i try to install it on an old dell 166 it says:

failed to locate cdrom device

Is there something else i can try? There is no options in BIOS that might help.

Thanks for your time.

When you first boot up to the CD you get this? Is the message from Ubuntu or from the machine's BIOS? And you can successfully boot up to the CD with a windows CD? I just installed Kubuntu on my laptop and luckily I didn't have a problem like this.

Its the message i get in bios, its an old computer with a dell image so i dont know about booting with a windows cd.

Do you have another optical drive, one that you know supports the El Torito standard, to replace that drive with? Just to see if the BIOS/mobo is capable of booting from CD...

have you tried another bootable CD, such as your windows disk. This breaks the problem down into either A: CD Rom drive problem, or B: Media/Ubuntu problem.

Windows wont load either, is there anyway to start loading on a floppy?

Can you make a boot floppy that enables the CD? Like back in the Win95 days before we had bootable CD-ROM devices. I think that might be your best bet.

I've downloaded images from there before without having to pay. I wonder why you have to pay for an image?
