on another note, one of the port lights on the router keeps blinking. its port2/link. thanks.

umm...when you hooked up the router, did you turn off the modem? Turning off the modem for about 10-20 mins will reset it. Reconnect the router and pcs to the network then turn the modem back on. This should fix it.

Well u should know, either At&t mediaone gave you a static IP when you signed up or they didn't. Regardless if you click on
WAN IP Address: Obtain an IP Address Automatically, it should get the IP address from the cable modem regardless if its static or dynamic.

What could be screwing things up is that you might need to enter something in these 2 fields: Host Name: Domain Name:. I didn't have to but you might. I'd call your ISP if I were you.

Since you have enabled DHCP, go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Networks, and make sure that: 1.) TCP/IP, Netbui, & IPX are installed and associated with the network card. Then click on TCP/IP and make sure under the IP tag that obtain an IP address automatically is selected.

Chances are you need to program your original computers NIC-MAC address into the router. AT&T mediaone uses MAC addresses to authenticate you on the network.

Find the NIC that used to work with your cable modem, then follow the instructions to upload the MAC address into the router.

For the netgear-314 router it is as simple as: (similar router)
1) NIC installed in a computer
2) Set the NIC for a static ip address use 192.168.0.40
(don't bother with DNS-WINS or anything else just set the ip static-then reboot)
3) Connect the computer to any of the LAN side ports 1-4.
4) Log into the router using a browser on the same machine you changed the ip address is fine--http://192.168.0.1
5) Follow the wizard till you see copy MAC address section
6) Enter 192.168.0.40 for the MAC address location--then begin the copy.

Now your router will pretend to be your NIC and authenticate you...

To test that it works power off both the router and cable modem for 2 mins. Then power on the modem, wait 1 minute then power on the router. The cable modem lights should flash then go all green, that means your connected. Now go setup your computers to work with the router per the instructions.

If you need more help i recommend the Community/Linksys forum at dslreports.com

Good Luck
