I can't get my DirecTV remote to control my AV receiver

So I RTFM and am still coming up blank. I found how to program the remote (select and mute) and tried all they codes for a Sony receiver. None of them worked but the weird thing is that no matter what code I put in, the remote would still control my TV. The remote blinked, confirming that it got a new code but nothing happened. Its almost like its "stuck" on the code for the TV.

Any ideas?

Did you make sure you swapped the command to the electronic you wanna control? Like push the button for TV or SAT etc.

I flipped the switch at the top...

I personally didnt have much luck getting my Dish remote to work with other things either. It would never control all the functions, I pretty much just use the remotes that come with the items. I know alot of people are happy with Logitech universal remotes if you wanna spend some dough and go that route.

Did you at least get it to turn off/on your receiver? I'm not at home in front of my tv right now, but there's another code/setting you need to do to tell it the volume control is supposed to control either your tv or your stereo.

nope...it wouldn't do anythingto the receiver, only the TV. Is it possible that its locked on the TV code?

That's how this whole thing started. I posted on FatWallet trying to find a deal on a universal remote. Then someone reminded me that the DirecTV remote is also universal.

Okay, I just got a new Sony system today and programmed my DirecTV remote to control it w/ no problems.

Slide selector switch to AV1
Hold mute/select wait for lights to flash
I used code 31759
Lights flashed after entering
Hit power button, stereo shuts off (edit: make sure you hitting PWR, not ON or OFF)
Hold down mute/select again, wait for lights to flash
Code 993, then volume down (this tells it to control stereo volume only when selector is on AV1)

All done.
