Im im not mistaken, you have to set the drive up first, make a partition on it before windows will see it. Then format it either in windows or when ya set the partition size on it.

Right-click My Computer, choose Manage, and go down to Storage > Disk Management. If your drive's listed there, right-click on the white bar that represents its capacity, and you should see where to go from there :)

I had the same problem with a WD 250GB, whatever you do DO NOT select the install option of fix the 137GB barrier problem, this will result in the PC not seeing any drive.
If I remember correctly the WD install program will give you another option take that one and follow the directions to partion it, you can select the whole drive as a partition and it will format it as NTFS and away you go.
you should have similar options with the maxtor.

Start->Run
compmgmt.msc
Storage->Disk Management
it should be a non-active not-partitioned disk
partition, format it (NTFS quick the full size), and a drive letter should be automatically assigned

You may have to Initialize Disk in Disk Management first as well. Right click the drive number "Disk 1" if it's the second hard drive and initialize it.
