I can't decide

I'm trying to decide if an overclocked Athlon 64 2800+ is worth the ~$100 more than an overclocked Athlon XP 2500+ mobile...so...yeah...

Nope. A64 2800+ doesn't give double the performance to justify double the price. Overclocked XP 2500+ mobile will give overclocked A64 2800+ run for its money.

I don't need twice the performance for twice cost, or rather the same price to performance ratio. If the price to performance ratio is still pretty close, however, I'll probably take the 2800+ because I can probably get my parents to pay for some of it. Anyway, I'm really just looking for opinions.

an athlon 64 2800+ at stock is faster then a Athlon XP barton at 2.5Ghz. Assuming you even get there, you still wont be as fast, so it is a chance of getting as fast, with the 64, you get it guarenteed.

Well, yeah, the A64 2800+ will be faster than the XP 2500+ pretty much no matter what, but what I'm interested in is if that margin is worth the ~$100 to you.

I find it really hard to beleave that a 2.5ghz barton would be out done but a 2800 a64. the a64 might win a few but the majority should still go to the 2.5ghz barton

wasn't there some benchmark previously that showed the OCed barton at 2.5Ghz gave a good showing against the FX-53 and P4? I just saw that recently.....

to answer your question, I was going the A64 route until I decided that the price/perf ratio of the AXP is better for me. I'll go the 64 route when the softwares are built and has been around for a while, so around 2 years or so still. Good luck to your choice.

A 2.5ghz mobile would most likely be faster than an A64 2800+ on stock. However, I don't advise getting a mobile 2500+ barton. The overclocks on those still are questionable. Of the several I OC'd, a few of them wouldn't go past 2.4, while one of them I got to 2.61ghz. At this point in time, I'd have to say you should be buying a 35w 2400+ over a 45w 2500+. They are the same price, save a dollar or so, but the 35w chip is more consistent. No one needs to be buying the mobile 2500+ anymore.

The point isn't wether a 2.5GHz mobile Barton can beat a stock A64 2800+, it's if it can beat an overclocked A64 2800+. But anyway, I keep swinging back on forth on whether I'd rather spend more money on a CPU or not.

Well, stock A64 2800+ runs at 1.8ghz I think. If you overclocked it to 2.2ghz+, I'd have to say goodbye to the mobile barton's lead.
