I can't decide if I want to upgrade to Iphone 3G

Here is a preliminary list of what I could come up with when trying to decide if I want to upgrade or not.

Why I should upgrade:
1) Supposedly better reception and phone quality
2) 3G
3) GPS
4) Bragging rights/Status symbol
5) only $299?

Why I shouldn't upgrade:
1) Nothing dramatically different from my Iphone
2) Location tracking, while not as good as GPS, is serviceable
3) I don't really use the internet that much when I'm not in a hotspot, although I hate how slow Edge is when I do need to use it.
4) resign another 2 year contract?!
5) $299 isn't chump change.

Thoughts?

I am going to pass on the 3g version. The phone itself seems cheap with the back plastic casing. The GPS and 3g arent too much of a need for me since 3g is not available in my area and the location tracking is fine. Also, you forgot to mention that you have to pay an extra $10/m for the unlimited 3g data plan.

I think this upgrade was just to get new customers only. I think the next iphone will be the one to own.

don't forget the data plan will cost ten bucks more.

I'm in the same boat... Still weighing options

//Edit
Above beat me to it on $10

Att will let current iPhone users upgrade because the one we already bought wasn't subsidized

if you don't think 3g is a dramatic difference, then you must not be in a 3g area. Its worth it for the 3g alone for me.

I wouldn't bother - 3G coverage isn't all that great, and the triangulation gets close enough, at least for me, for directions. Beyond this one, most of the advancement will be in software, hardware is pretty good other than battery life and maybe the size of the unit.

WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT.

If you already own one it is utterly stupid to think about buying the 3g version. About 99 percent of the new features are software, and everyone gets those.

With 3g you really only get faster data, A-Gps (assisted), louder speaker, and maybe better reception.

I like to think the reception is based more on the network than the phone despite how it is marketed, that and i never have issues with the reception on mine. The speakers do suck but it was really meant for headphones. Also, bluetooth headsets totally rock for phone convos so that's also a mute point.

I say wait a few months and see what happens. Remember that hindsight is 20/20 so lets review.

First iphone launch was in June i think of 2007. 3 months later they drop the price 200.00 (probably never going to happen again since 199 seems to be the bottom line now)
Next they release the ipod touch.
Next, sometime before december they phase out the 4gb version in lieu of a cheaper 8gig model and introduce an upgraded 16 gb model at 499.00. The ipod touch drops their price and introduces a 32 gb model.

My predictions are that sometime this year we will see the 8gb get phased out. There will be a 16gb 199 model and 32gb 299 model.

The new ones in 2009 will probably feature a better battery (lots of tech in this field has advanced recently) and more storage. They may also improve the camera or add another though that seems unlikely.

I predict they will almost indefinitely find a way to further improve their own stock software as they seem to have done every update.

The form factor seems pretty set so no needs to worry there (look at ipods to see they dont deviate much).

The 2009 IPhone (to avoid confusion with the 3g moniker) will probably be another slight evolution of the 2008 3g model. There will be more incremental changes. The reason i say wait is mostly because the difference between the 2007 and 2009 iphones will be vastly greater than between the 2007 and 2008 or the 2008 and 2009. Waiting will also save you some money so you can be better prepared to purchase the 2009 version. It will seem like more of an upgrade than this one.

Keep in mind this time around it really feels like apple is pursuing new customers rather than enticing existing customers to upgrade. Their whole must sell x million iphones by this date leads me to believe that once they hit that mark they will focus more on getting these people to upgrade to the 2009 version rather than going after more new customers.

Apple and ATT still have a 5 year contract for exclusivity as far as I know so that makes it open around 2012 to other carriers. Competition in the service field should drive some better pricing schemes among all of the carriers. By then, apple may have revolutionized the iphone or at least i hope the carriers will have revolutionized data transfers to allow for more freedom of features.

Right now, as it stands, its 15.00 more for the 3g data plan, almost double. The idea here is it was 20 for unlimited and 200texts. Now its 30 for unlimited and 5 extra for the 200 texts. 30+5=35 35-20=15 dollars extra for 3g.

Anyway, that is why I will not be upgrading mostly. It still wont hurt to wait it out, see what they do, and see how much different the 3g one is.

I forgot to add the additional $10/month 3G service charge. I think i'm leaning towards keeping my old one and waiting for 2009 as well. That being said, lets say you buy a few apps on your old iphone and then decide to upgrade, are your apps ported to your new iphone as well or do you need to repurchase them?

I would imagine, since they can be bought via itunes as well that they will be tied to your account the same way music is meaning that you can just load them on any phone that has your itunes account loaded in it.

I can see this being interesting though. Stevie did say they are protected with fairplay drm so maybe you have to unload them from one to load them on another.

If you can sell your current iPhone for $659 ($299 device +$15 data*24months) then go for it. Or $559 if you'd rather get another 8GB iPhone.

Personally, I'm 99.9% sure I am not going to upgrade, but we'll see what happens after the AT&T rate plans come out in writing.

Uh...those sound like pretty good reasons to upgrade to me! :D

I'm still considering upgrading. The main thing I want is 3G...EDGE is soooo slow! I already have a GPS and unless the TomTom stuff really blows my Garmin Nuvi 680 out of the water, I don't think it will be a very big feature for me as far as car navigation goes. I may hold off for the 32gb model, just so that it will be more of an upgrade over my current 8-gig model.

If you really need 3G or GPS, then I'd do it. I'm fine with edge (yeah, you heard me), and I have a tomtom already so...meh.

Personally, I have decided to wait until a 32GB version is available. In addition to the $10 extra per month for the 3G data plan, if you need text messages, you will also have to pay an extra $5 month to get the 200 messages per month the 1st gen plan gives out for free (I think...still not 100% clear on this).

I say, wait for the 32GB version. Or, at the very least, wait until some of the 3G iPhones get in peoples hands and see how well they work.

I say go for it. I know you said you wont use the internet but I've used my iPhone many times just to go online to find out a fact or what not. You never know when you need to find a bit of information and before on the EDGE network it was slow and alittle bit of a chore. With 3g now going online can be fast and fun.

I voted yes because the price of the phone alone sells its GPS and mobile internet device which cost much more if u were to buy their respective devices.
