I have a Optorite DvD+- DL RW drive. Lately I have been unable to burn any type of RW media. Be it CD-RWs or DvD RWs of different brands. Some times the burn would be "sucessful" but when trying to play the media I get bad skips or no data. Even when trying to do a quick erase on new media the process keeps running and running and never finishes.
I have not had any problems with normal +R media.
Should I just toss this drive and get a new on?

You could try updating the firmware for your DVD-RW from the manfacutres website and see if that helps any. Although its unlikely

I just bought a new DvD-RW drive(a nice one too does all Formats) anyways I'm still having the same issue. +Rs burn no problems at all but all RW media be it DvD+RW or CD-RW I either get failed burns or a "sucessful" burn but issues playing back(i'm using serveral different brands here, same issue).

I'm thinking it might be software but I have this issue with Itunes, Clone-DvD, Nero, so it can't be a softwrae issue. I'm using the standard plug and pray drivers.

What else could the problem be?

Have you tested your computers memory & have you done a diagnostic of your hard drive(s) integrity ?

First thing is to ask what media you are using, budget media is an utter waste of time, money and effort. Before you blame the drive buy 5 verbatim discs or TY discs and try them.

Also download Nero CD speed (not releated to nero burning app as far as i can tell) and do a quality scan on the disc.

For better advice than you'll get here go to http://www.cdfreaks.com

I have never considered memorex "budget" or cheap media. I've been using this stuff for over 5 years(I just but a new pack of RWs last week) No problems until now.

BTW, I just burned a MP3 CDRW with Itunes ran CD Speed 100% bad.
I did a full erase burined a Audo CDRW(used a non used CDRW disk) 100% damaged.
Both from my new Drive.

This is driving me crazy

While I don't think memorex is bad media either, I would agree with trying a different brand just to make sure.

So you had a drive. It sucked on RW media.
You bought a new drive. And you're having the same problem?

Maybe your old drive killed your RW media. That could be a possibility, albeit remote.

Is DMA enabled? I don't think would have anything to do with it, but it should be enabled.

When was the last time you reformatted? Sometimes weird things just gunk up a system and make these strange errors happen. When all else fails, I just reformat. It takes an hour (or in my case about 2 minutes with Ghost) and you end up wasting less time with all the troubleshooting. And less wasted media as in your case.

Would turning off the XP native CD buring support thingy cause this type of problem?
Althought I don't see why that would have an effect on apps like Itunes or Nero, they use their own drivers.
