Given what we know form the story, both the professor and the administration are idiots and should be ashamed. However, I don't even mind that they called the police. A 20 second conversation with the student would have cleared up any misunderstanding.
The part of the story that worries me is that the police immediately brought up a list of the student's firearms. If that doesn't scare the shit out of you, I don't know what to tell you. The government and its representatives should not be given that power.
