College students shouldn't have to drive much. And the ones I see driving around in brand new cars have no place complaining.

Walk or ride a bike. Or buy a scooter.

In college I lived in an apartment across the street from the campus commuter lot. It basically went <apartment>--<commuter lot>--<academic buildings>. Some people in my apartment complex would DRIVE TO THE COMMUTER LOT to go to class. Seriously, how stupid can you be? Gas prices are high, yes, but to some people, the thought of changing their habits doesn't even occur to them as an option.

Gas is a scarce resource. A monetary system is the method used for rationing a scarce resource. That's a basic principle of economics, chapter 1. I think that alot of Americans are forgetting this principle and instead want something done to bring their gas prices down to $1.50 a gallon. To me, if you believe that the American economy should be a capitalist system based on the "invisible hand," then you are contradicting yourself if you want "something to be done" about gas prices. And I don't mean you specifically, Good Guy. Gas prices are what they are because we will pay it. We're doing a great job of proving that to the suppliers of gas because we're filling up over and over, not curtailing our consumption at all. The law of Supply and Demand is proving itself once again, and that's fine with me because we live in a capitalist economy (I hope).

I spend about $10 more at the pump everytime I fill up. I really don't consider it all that much more expensive at this point.

good. Oil companies are recording record profits and the American public gets screwed. In addition, Congress and the President do nothing about it. Why aren't they putting presure on the oil companies to reduce the price of oil? Oh, could it be that our beloved President and Republican run Congress are both pro BIG business?

I agree with Triumph. We live in a capitalist economy and by golly we should all be pro BIG business. In that regard I believe that you should all lose your jobs to the immigrants that are pouring into this country? You say you make $22 an hr? lol, please. Big business can train 3 Mexicans to do your job. Do the math: 3>1. I'd take the 3 immigrants any day.

Thank god I have a nice sizable inheritance coming my way when my uncle passes away. The money that I'm getting will easily sustain me while more middle American's slide into poverty.

what a shame.

So what is your real argument? That we should be artificially forcing oil companies to lower their prices? That we should start drilling in Alaska? That we should invade more Middle Eastern countries and take control of their oil reserves? How bout just NOT DRIVING SO MUCH instead?

Unfortunately, that's one of the areas where the public school system has really failed.

When very few companies have complete control over something that is virtually a necessity, then yes, gov't does have a responsibility to help regulate prices. The infrastructure and economy of our nation is based on access to cheap fuel. It's a little too late to say "everyone in the suburbs, move back into the city, NOW." If you're geographically challenged, find a map of the world or a globe and look at the size of the United States. 200 and some million people. Then compare it to just about any other industrialized nation on earth. We are spread out! Don't forget, gasoline and other utility costs affect the price of virtually everything else produced for consumption.

I live 30 miles from work. I live 60 miles from college. Public transporation is horrible in NJ. It takes 2 hours by bus to get to a desination that would normally take 45 minutes by car.

Asking people to not drive so much is ignorant. You don't know their situations. What about people with disabilities? Asking them to walk is insane.

As I stated I'm not really affected by the HUGE surge in gas prices. I feel sorry for the other people that are going to be affected. This isn't good for the economy and it's not good for middle America.

Another fine post from tec699 demonstrating the flaws in our educational system.
