Downloaded and installed it.

The setup deal after booting blanks my screen when moving to sound card detection. (Granted I have a weird one.. I'll try disconnecting it)
Maybe that will work.

Previously, I just bypassed the setup.

My system:

1 ghz ath (slot)
1 80gb wd (66mbps)
1 yamaha 16x burner
geforce 2 ti
hercules granfurtissimo II

Unfortunatly that didn't help!

MS

Any ideas?

I am thinking about going back to RH 8.. I can skip the setup dialog that way.

Is it just a black screen? Maybe it's pushing your video cards refresh rate to one that is unsupported by your monitor? Try booting to console?

Booting to console yields black screen as well as it does during boot time after about the fifth service loading! :-(

Try Mandrake 9.1. It's been reported to have very good hardware detection. I'm using it on my laptop, and like it quite a bit more than RH9

I would stick to redhat...I have a fortissimo II so your alright.

Try running the setup through the text mode ..it isn't that bad.

Would but I have a similar issue with Mandrake 9.1 it's starting to look more and more like my video card. The geforce 2 TI.

Read about those problems here..

Thanks

RH9 gave me numerous headaches during install. Graphical installer would always lockup on the partitioning, so I used the text installer. After installing with the text install, GRUB and LILO will always hang. RH8's install did not have this problem, only RH9.

I have no problems whatsoever during install on either system. Mandrake 9.1 or RH 9.

On initial boot (RH 9) the system configurator crashes, black screen. This configurator cannot be exited out of like it could be in RH 8. It caused the same problem with that version, although, I could just choose to exit. RH 9 also cannot boot to console because it goes to a black screen, as explained during service / boot time.

On inital boot (Mandrake 9.1) the screen goes blank during service/boot time. On inital shutdown the machine freezes and on reboot the machine does not finish loading services. Only reinstalling the entire O.S. seems to fix the problem a then it happens again! (I tried the diagnostic/recovery mode from cd boot no luck)

Thats all I can really tell yah,

I'm leaning towards changing out my video board as that, not the sound card seems to be the source of the problem.

Try this:

1. Install and reboot to Text mode.
2. ftp (using ftp or NCFTP if you installed it.) to downloads.nvidia.com
a. cd to XFree86/Linux-x86
b. get NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run
3. close the FTP session and as root run sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run and select the correct setting.
4. setup Monitor0 with Option "dpms"
5. set driver to "nvidia" (under Card?- I think)
6. try startx
7. set /etc/inittab to 5 instead of 3
8. reboot.

The GeForce 2 cards are much testier then most (execpt the FX1000 Workstation cards which need to be set up in lowres) and I have had to do this numerous times. If you have an questions let me know. I would expect this to fix your RH9 issue

Ok.. so your saying boot to console? If so, I can't. Booting to console (not starting x) blanks my screen. On any distro I have tried except, Mandrake 8.

These include Redhat 7.2, Redhat 8, Redhat 9, Mandrake 9, Mandrake 9.1

As you can tell im a somewhat of a linux newbie. It's pretty sad and makes things impossible as far as editing some conf files such as XFree86.. I have to edit in XServer then reboot hoping i didn't screw it up! This is a major issue, as you can tell.

If im off base could you clarify a little more for me?

Installing the NVIDIA drivers for Xserver doesn't fix this problem either. Tried it... :-(

thanks

do you have multiple outputs on your card? If so then change to the "other" output.... I suspect that you are getting a blank console because you may be attached to the "wrong" output.....

yeah it does blank..

But check this. I ran RH 9 update over RH 8 it updated and i didn't have to run the config on inital boot.

That still doesn't change the other issue the cli/console blanking out :-(.

do you get a console now? ALT-Ctrl-F1? if so then you have something verrryyy weird going on... (Come to think of it I bet that you are loading the NV driver with the TI)

Ok that does work.

It just happens on boot. I can't boot to console or see services loading after about the fifth one.

This install does not have the NVIDIA drivers loaded on it.. that might make a difference although i doubt it, I have never figured this one out. (or had enough help)

thanks
