Yeah, we did the baking soda plus vinegar volcanos too. There was also another one that involved adding some kind of acid (sulfuric?) to sugar and ending up with a big chunk of carbon.

I remember seeing the hammer plus gunpowder demo in my college chemistry course too. It was a lot funnier that time around because you had an auditorium packed full of students making fun of the professor by going "Ooooo!! Ahhhh!!"
