I cannot get flash update in ie11 to work

I have windows 8.1 and flash only works with the built in flash version in ie11 if I update flash to any version ie11 will crash when flash content is on a website. I searched high and low on the internet for a fix and nothing works I have tried deleting all the flash files in the system drive, messing with "internet options" and trying to reenable flash.ocx none of that works. I just know that the problem is with updating flash if I do, flash will no longer work. The embedded flash version in ie11 is 11.8.800.133 from 8/15/13.

Does anybody on here know how to get updates to work? Keep in mind I am only talking about desktop IE I never work in metro. I would like more security with these updates, but it is a necessary compromise to get flash functional since it is used too often on websites. I also use IE as a default browser and do have other browsers that are used for specific purposes like firefox or chrome, but IE is important to me because of the pinned site feature that divides the browser and as well as the pulling tabs in and out of windows.

Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

I recently read having shockwave and flash installed at the same time can cause issues. Another suggestion is it possible to remove IE 11 and reinstall, I do not have access to a Win 8 computer but am fairly sure this can be done.

my Win 8.1 IE11 flash is version 14.0.0.176.

not sure why yours is so old.

Do you have the latest version of IE11?

I found out in a painful way that IE11 is integrated into Windows 8.1 and cannot be uninstalled nor downgraded. I would try a chkdsk, then if corruption is found, chkdsk /scan /perf and if it cannot fix it all, chkdsk /f then reboot and run an sfc /scannow. You may also try disabling hardware acceleration in Flash, but I discovered when one machine's video card was crapping out causing just Flash content to corrupt the screen, I was unable to get to the setup to disable acceleration for Flash. There is also the refresh function deep in the charms bar where it will repair the installation without affecting settings or programs. If all else fails, you are looking at a reload of the OS.

Flash for IE is delivered through Windows Update. If Windows has been kept up to date I'm not really sure how you could have such an old version since I'm pretty sure it won't let you use anything other than the built in one.

I didn't think it would let you install it if you download the activex one from their website.

I also read about ie11 in win8.1 is permanently a part of 8.1 and cant reinstall. Thanks for the suggestions PliotronX but I was returned with no errors. No changes in "internet options" help including the acceleration toggle. I am already knee deep in a reinstall from win 7 to 8.1 and don't want to repeat the process to get to the point my installation is in now over some flash plugin. I did create a custom win 8.1 install with wintoolkit , but made sure to not remove ie or critical components I mean I still have wmp as an optional install. I did preinstall updates so there is less to pull from windows update when I link my computer to the internet. Those updates probably included the 8-15-13 flash version some how and now it won't tolerate updates?

I have to avoid the flash update in windows update because attaching any update on top of the current flash will break flash. Maybe the updates are not fully superseding the older flash version and it is causing crashes?
