Yeah, I have an unused Turbo Fan module too. I did eventually put a quiet 120mm fan on it using cable ties to see if I could overclock farther, but while temperatures went even farther down, I don't think I got appreciably more clocks.

This was also the problem with the stock 4850 cooler. At 85% the thing was whining like a wife on a bad day.

To be honest, I'm thinking a 120mm fan will be overkill. I don't need better temps, and for right now I'm barely overclocking (the rest of the system doesn't justify it). I think I'm going to use the fan speed selector that came with my Zalman VF-700 to run the 80mm fan at 5v. It will still be silent, but will pass a little air over the VRM and Mosfet area, which is all that I'm really concerned about.

I got mine in today, and holy crap. Load temps 35-36C with furmark. Was ~70c with stock fan at 100%

On my 7900GS I went from the stock tiny cooler to a Zalman VF700-CU and my temps dropped near 30C. Your temp drop is very nice considering the 9800 already had a beefy dual slot cooler.

my 4870x2 have some strange behavior .. i swear... they make some strange noises... and also the card run one core only and hot as hell and the second one is idle... AI is on... even 32AA doesnt kick up the second one.... unless the first core in CCC shows the usage of both... but in that case the second one in the list is a joke right?

Does anyone know if the 4850's have VRM temp monitoring?

I'm curious after installing an Accelero TWIN TURBO on my cousins 4850 what his VRM temps are; I thermal glued heatsinks to them, just curious to see what the temps are if possible.

From what I can tell, no, they don't have any temp monitoring on the VRM's. Sure would be nice though.

The only thing I don't like about the Accelero is the little ramsinks and VRM sinks. The VRM aren't really the right shape for my 9800GT, and I am far from confident that they are attached solidly. Oh well, if they do come off, there will still likely be plenty of cooling capacity to keep them low

Get GPU-Z from TechPowerUp, run it and check the Sensor Tab. I know my HD4870 does have VRM sensors.

I agree. That's why I removed the thermal pads that came with it, and glued them on - really carefully - using this: Arctic Silver ASTA-7G (2-PC-SET) Premium Silver Thermal Adhesive - OEM

Actually 9800 GTs do not need any VRM cooling. I had an 8800 volt modded to hell and back without any heatsinks on the VRM area.

The ram sinks stick very well. At least they did for me . If you use isopropylic alcohol to wipe the ram chips first, they'll stick like super glue.

The Accelero S1 is probably good on a 4870 unless you overclock it. I tried overclocking my 4870 with one and load temps kept shooting up into the 80C+ range. I think that's its thermal limit.

Yeah I did the alcohol bit, but then I rubbed them all with an eraser (the instructions said to, I was like wtf? but I did it anyways)


Oh well, I'm confident that even if they do fall off there won't be any issues. With two 92mm fans blowing down on the area + 12c ambient, I'm getting WC-esque temps. I just with I had a quad to test out in this environment to see what temps it hits.
