I can understand why there are so many illegal aliens in this country now...

INS is such a big freaking joke. I swear you could get 5 year old kids that could run the place better.

Wife's employment authorization is going to expire on Sept 2, 2004. We had our interview for her adjustment of status in the middle of April and we were told by the INS officer that we would receive her temp green card within 60 days. I am positive of this because I asked 3 times just to make sure. She also told us that we won't have to worry about her work permit because once we get the temp. green card, we would be good to go.
After 70 days with no card in sight, we called INS and they said they'll get back to us within 30 days.
Fast forward to today, my wife gets a letter from her company saying she needs to provide them with a renewed emp. authorization or else it's bye bye. I call up INS and the g@#$ @##@$ idiot tells me that it takes 6 months to get the temp green card. She refused to address the issue about an INS officer telling me 60 days. The best part is she tells me it takes 90 days to renew an employment authorization. So we can do it online today (which costs $175 btw) and we'll supposedly get it by the end of October.
I have no idea what to do about my wife's job. I fear that she is going to lose it now because those incompetent idiotic moronic #@#@$ can't do their god damned jobs right.

Um, I worked at an orphanage outside of Tecate for a while and visited the colonias, including one inside a garbage dump where thousands of people live. I know why we have so many illegal immigrants.

Thats weird... a few years ago before I got my GC, when I had to renew my EAC, all I had to do was show up at the INS office on a specific weekday(wed if I recall) in person and fill out a form and they do it right there... Had to wait for a couple hours... but it was pretty painless... going in person to the offce often helps a lot...

We do all the paperwork at our local office which is the main Washington DC office. But she still says theres a 90 day period to get the work auth.

Well man, you may not have a choice but to let the wife's job go. Do not let the wife continue working with agreement from INS that everything is cool.

From what I've heard about prisons, the criminals get treated better.

They don't hold a candle to the Social Security offices. Every time I've ever had to go it's been a disaster. The last time I went - I needed a social security card. I waited in line for THREE HOURS, to hand them the application and show them my state ID. Three hours gone, and I spent less then a minute at the counter. The worst thing is they close at 5:30, and they don't tell the people who get in line at 2:30 that they probably won't be able to do their deed that day, they just let them wait and shut the door in their face 3 hours later. On weekends its worse . . .

Because it is sooo difficult for a legitimate person to get a work visa.

Moron. Because of the hopelessly complicated process combined with workers with the same competence level as you, people just say screw it and don't bother doing all the paper work. Now go troll elsewhere idiot.

I thought if someone (your wife) marries an American citizen (you), she gains her citizenship?

That's true but it's at least a 5 year process :(.

I've already shelled out over $800 just in fees. Plus the $175 for this extension it's getting to be expensive.

I feel your pain, I just love going in to talk to them. Thankfully I've only had to deal with some of the smaller offices so they haven't been as hectic, just inefficient.

It's another reason to get naturalized as soon as possible.

Not citizenship. Green card.

Very different.

Green card means can work as any other American.

Citizenship means green card + can vote, receive social security, etc...

Lemme get this straight, your wife's passport already been stamped after the interview, and the USCIS officer said she'll need a EAD or wait till the green card before she can work? What kind of seal/stamp did they place on the passport? Is it the I-551 stamp?

I can tell you tomorrow when I get her passport from our safety deposit box :)

She had her employement authorization since last year and she's been working since January of this year. We had our interview this last April (2004) and the INS officer stamped her passport but I can't recall off the top of my head what stamp it was.

i went thru the same process...its always a pita. Usually its about 4 hour wait at the building then you spend some 20 mins at the counter trying to explain what you're doing and then they send you home because the information you got from some other INS person wasnt correct. My parents hired an immigration lawyer and even with her it still was a hassle.

My main problem with INS is that most of the people have HORRIBLE attitude towards you - you always feel like youre bothering them and they are doing you a favor by doing their job. Even my stepdad (an american) got the same feel.
